Zias whip Kingsville

KINGSVILLE, Texas — Junior guard Laci Lee led three Eastern New Mexico University players in double figures with 17 points Saturday afternoon and the Zias pulled away after a close first half to beat struggling Texas A&M-Kingsville 67-47 in Lone Star Conference South Division women’s basketball.

ENMU (9-8, 3-1 South) won for the fifth time in six games and moved over the .500 mark this late in the season for the first time since 2000, when the Zias finished 17-10.

Sophomore Elizabeth Richards added 15 points and senior Jereena Bosket 13 for Eastern, which trailed by three points late in the half. The Zias scored the last four points of the first half and the first seven of the second, stretching a one-point lead to 36-24, and the margin slipped under double figures just once the rest of the way.

“I thought Jereena played pretty well; she got us going inside,” ENMU women’s coach Dan Buzard said. “I thought in the second half we played pretty well.

“Laci’s just been solid for us lately. ‘E’ (Richards) didn’t shoot the ball that well (7-for-18), but she contributed in lots of ways (with eight rebounds, three assists, two blocks and two steals).”

Freshman Angela Trotter scored 19 points for the Javelinas (1-15, 0-3), who lost their 14th consecutive game. She was the only player in double figures for Kingsville, which lost 60-58 on Thursday to West Texas A&M.

ENMU led by nine points early, but two field goals and two free throws by Trotter keyed an 10-0 run that pushed Kingsville ahead 20-17 with seven minutes left in the half. The Zias then countered by outscoring TAMK 12-4 to take a five-point lead into halftime.
