Mr. Eual “Vaughn” Holland, 76, of Portales died Monday, Dec. 29, 2003, at Roosevelt General Hospital in Portales.

He was born on July 22, 1927, in Alba, Texas, to Naomi and Joseph Holland.

In high school he played on the basketball team and the baseball team and he drove the school bus. His first job was working on a seismograph crew in the oil fields. He served in the Army in the 88th Infantry. He was stationed in Italy where he guarded German prisoners of war. He married Mary Campbell on July 26, 1947. In 1949, he took a job as a lineman with the telephone company, retiring in 1981. He was a member of the Third and Kilgore Church of Christ. Family members said he was an outgoing and friendly man who loved people and had fun teasing and being teased by friends and family members.

He was preceded in death by his parents; an infant sister; and two brothers, Garlon and Louie Holland.

Survivors include his wife; a son, Joe Holland (and wife Jeannine) of Los Alamos; two daughters, Joan Ketchem (Bill) of Lubbock and Janice Rios of Arlington, Texas; seven grandchildren, Jennie and Sarah Ketchem, Lyndsey, Kenna and Morgan Holland and Kaitland and Marisa Rios; a sister, Nadine Howard of Enid, Okla.

Peter Dahlstrom and David Bennett will officiate the services.

Burial will be at Portales Cemetery.

Pallbearers will be Austin Hale, Denver Collins, Len Miller, Montie Nickels, Roy Lee and Cade Standifer.

Honorary pallbearers are Dudley Cash, Pete Wells, Jim Brooks, Ernie Marshall, Jim Chandler, Jack Merrick, Johnny Lieb and Curtis Breshears.
