Marshall Junior High to host "Rock-A-Thon"

Reporter's Notebook

New Marshall Junior High choir director Kimberly Hale should be able to get acquainted with her students rather quickly after an all-nighter of rockin’ tonight.

Of course, in this case, the participants in the junior high choir’s “Rock-A-Thon” will literally be rocking the the night away — in rocking chairs. The event is one of two major fund raisers each year for the choir and will begin at 7 tonight and end at 7 a.m. on Saturday.

Hale just moved to Clovis, with her husband, from El Paso and only started at Marshall last week in her new duties. Ironically, Hale replaced Jan McFarland, who had just moved to El Paso with her husband.

“They’ve done it in years past and it’s a fund raiser for music and supplies and travel expenses,” Hale said. “They do it early in the semester so it doesn’t interfere with track and field and some of the other activities.”

Marshall students will sway the night away in rocking chairs and other similar types of moving chairs. Hale said she expects the students each will be doing their own activities to pass away the hours.

“We clear away the music room for this. They have to rock continuously for 12 hours and, in return, they get pledges per hour or in a lump sum,” Hale said. “We get power strips and put them along the walls, so they bring their game systems or CD players or whatever they need to keep them occupied.”
