One dead in Clovis shooting

A 47-year-old Clovis man died Tuesday night following a shooting on Sunrise Street in south Clovis.

Ricardo “Ricky” Gallegos was pronounced dead at 8 p.m. Tuesday inside a trailer at 1013 Sunrise by a deputy investigator of the Office of the Medical Investigator. Police said they couldn’t release further details of the incident, pending further investigation.

However, Clovis Police Capt. Dan Blair said police were seeking Steve Duran, 34, of Clovis for questioning in the case.

Duran was described as 5 foot, 7 inches, with brown eyes and brown hair.

He was driving a gray 1989 Toyota Forerunner, license DSB450, with red tape over the passenger tail light, damage to a passenger side door and a broken passenger side window. He was described as armed and dangerous, according to a bulletin issued by the Clovis police Tuesday night.

Blair said police received 911 calls reporting shots fired and an injury from several different callers in the neighborhood around 7:19 p.m. Tuesday.

Witnesses at the scene said they heard gunshots and saw a dark-colored Chevy pickup “with guns hanging out of the window” head north on Sunrise Street, then turn east on Mercury Street.

Although the trailer where Gallegos was found has a Sunrise address, it sits back from the street, facing Mercury.

They said that following the shots they saw someone running across Sunrise shouting, “Mother,” “Help” and “Call an ambulance.”

Irene Montano, 13, of 1100 Sunrise St., said she was in her home when she heard six shots. Shortly afterward her aunt, Mary Jane Lucero, 47, ran into the trailer, screaming “Call an ambulance.”

Montano said Gallegos was her aunt’s boyfriend. Blair confirmed Tuesday night that 1100 Sunrise St. was one of the addresses from which police received a 911 call.
