A recent Project: Reader Reaction question asked:
“Who’s the No. 1 college football team? The University of Southern California or Louisiana State University? And since college football has once again failed to establish an undisputed champion, is it time for a playoff system?”
Some responses:
“Yes, a playoff system needs to be installed to correct this situation. It could be as simple as adding one more game. The No. 2- and No. 3-ranked teams should play in the Rose bowl and the No. 1- and No. 4-ranked teams play in the Sugar Bowl. The winners of these games would play each other for the real national championship. There also has to be a way to combine the results of the BCS and AP polls to come up with the proper ranking of each team; then the teams would have it in their hands to prove themselves. I’m sure they could come up with another special bowl name and location.”

“I would pick LSU as the No. 1 team. Their only loss was to a ranked team (Florida) while USC’s only loss was to an unranked team (California). LSU also beat a higher-ranked team in its bowl game. Next year I would like to see the top four teams (No. 1 vs. No. 4 and No. 2 vs. No. 3) play in the final two bowl games, with the winners meeting the next week before classes start for most schools.”
— Wendel Sloan, Portales
“I would like to see a playoff system under the right circumstances. This year would have been one since the BCS and the polls had a difference of opinion. We could just do away with the BCS and use the polls.”
— Jeff Greene, Clovis
“It is time for a playoff system in college sports. I am by no means a sports aficionado, but I do know that the system to an outsider seems rife with favoritism and good-ol’-boyism. As for who is No. 1, it’s LSU ... for no particular reason.”
— Brent McBee, Clovis
“Top college football team? No one knows. Maybe Ohio State. I believe in a playoff in situations like the one in 2004. So does the public. ...”
— Harold Burris, Clovis
“LSU. (And) keep (the system) as is. College games teach sportsmanship.”

“It is past time for a college playoff system! USC is a better team than LSU. The only way to prove it is with a playoff.”
— John Frey, Clovis
“USC (is No. 1) and no, I don’t believe there should be a playoff in college football. Undisputed champions should be saved for the pros.”
— Jim Sitterly, Clovis
“I am not particularly fond of college football, so I rarely ever watch it. I do believe that a playoff system is more fair in determining the champion team.”
— Amy Graves, Clovis
“This past fall my office door wore a button, and still does, that reads, “Go Trojans!” And they did! So bring on that other team. So Cal shines!”
