Portales police arrest one drunk driver during holiday

The element of surprise. The Portales residents can do without it, especially when it comes to arrests on the holidays.
The first arrest of the 2004 year was made 29 minutes into the new year. It was for driving while intoxicated, among other citations. However, it was the only arrest on New Year’s eve, according to Portales Police Capt. Lonnie Berry.
The Portales police department looks out for a couple of common events during New Year’s eve: drunk drivers, loud parties and gun shots into the air to celebrate the new year.
“We had a couple of calls of loud parties and we did a citation on one of them,” Berry said. “We also had some calls about shots fired at midnight. The officers went to the area, but couldn’t substantiate any of them (calls).”
Berry said that it’s about the same amount of calls they received last year. Berry went on to say that it was the norm for Portales and that some other aspects affected the partying.
“I think because it (New Year’s Eve) was in the middle of the week, there were less people celebrating,” Berry said. “They didn’t do as much as they would have if it would have been on the weekend or if they had three days off of work. Most of them had to be back at work on Friday.”
People have described Portales as a quiet community with few violent incidents.
“We don’t have much violence and that’s fortunate for us,” Berry said. “We have a really quiet community.”
