Lady Rams open against Los Alamos

What better way to do forget about losing in a tournament championship game than winning one the next week.

Portales (4-2) plays the Los Alamos Lady Hilltoppers at 1 p.m. Thursday in the opening round Lady Horseman Christmas Tournament at St. Michael’s High School in Santa Fe.

“They have some good athletes on their team and they’re about the same size (as the Lady Rams),” Portales coach Brenda Gomez said. “We would like to get the ball inside and we would like to put pressure on the outside.”

The Lady Rams are coming off a 71-64 loss to Rio Rancho Saturday in the Mel Otero Invitational in Rio Rancho.

“We made some adjustments,” Gomez said about the loss to Rio Rancho. “We watched film and we’re more aware now of what we did wrong. We weren’t setting good picks and we weren’t reading the picks.”

With a win Thursday the Lady Rams will take on the winner of a first-round game between Santa Fe and West Las Vegas. West Las Vegas (3-2) has wins over Taos, Mora and Maxwell and losses to Des Moines and Tohatchi.

“They’re pretty good,” West Las Vegas coach Jose Medina said about Santa Fe High. “We’re real young. We only have one senior on the team.”

Santa Fe defeated the Lady Rams last season twice, Gomez said.
