Mary Alice Copeland, 92, of Clovis, a homemaker, died Tuesday, Nov. 18, 2003, at her home.

She was born on Sept. 10, 1911, in Abilene, Texas, to John Ernest and Willie Wright Griggs.

Her early years were spent in Temple, Texas, where she was first introduced to Girl Scouting. In 1923 she moved to Amarillo, Texas, with her parents. She was selected as one of 24 girls to become members of the Alpine Troop of Girl Scouts, who were the first American Girl Scouts to attend the International Girl Scout camp in Geneva, Switzerland. She married George C. “Jack” Copeland on April 12, 1931. She was active in the Methodist church. In 1943 they moved to their ranch near Amistad. In 1960 they moved to Clovis. She was a member of the United Methodist Women, DAR, the Clovis Woman’s Club, Smokey Bear Motor Coach Club, Hospital Auxiliary as a Pink Lady, and the Senior Citizens Kitchen Band.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; a sister, Virginia; a brother, Jack; a son-in-law, Hugh Ritch; and two grandchildren, Wayne and Daryl.

Survivors include her children, Clifford Copeland (and wife, Barbara) of Amistad, Patricia Ritch of Clovis, Ernest Copeland (Brenda) of Santa Rosa and Otis Copeland (Barbara) of Clovis; six grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

Steve McElroy and the Rev. James Robbins will officiate the services.

Burial will be at Lawn Haven Memorial Gardens in Clovis.

Memorial contributions may be made to the New Mexico Boys Ranch, First United Methodist Church, Amistad Methodist Church or to Hospice.

Arrangements are under the direction of Steed-Todd Funeral Home of Clovis.
