Bernice Allen, 88

Mrs. Bernice Allen, 88, of Portales died Monday, Dec. 8, 2003, at Retirement Ranch in Clovis.

She was born on March 17, 1915, in Comanche, Texas, to Ellen and C.C. Westfall.

While she was in grade school, the family moved to Dexter. Then they moved to Portales where she attended junior high and graduated from Portales High School in 1933. She went on to earn a degree in education and taught school for 22 years. She taught ages from third grade through high school. She married Bob Allen in 1947 in Cheyenne, Wyo. She made her home in Santa Fe until 1972 when she moved to Farmington for a teaching position. After her retirement in 1980, she returned to Santa Fe where she lived until 2001 when she came to Portales to live with her sister. She was a member of the Church of Christ. Family members said she always enjoyed family gatherings at holidays, was an avid sports fan and especially liked to watch football.

She was preceded in death by her parents; three brothers, Wayne, Alvie and Boss Westfall; two sisters, Vivian Terry and DeBee Coffman; and by her husband.

Survivors include two brothers, Archie Westfall of Albuquerque and Bob Westfall of Carlsbad; a sister, Echla Dufault of Tonto Basin, Ariz.; and a numerous nieces and nephews.

Gary and Barry Coffman and David Bennett will officiate the services.

Burial will be at 3 p.m. Friday at the National Cemetery in Santa Fe.

Honorary pallbearers are Clint, Heather, Cassidy and Cody Coffman, Shrene and E.J. Sandquist, Karyn Pond, Terri Smith, Brenda Hayes, Robbie and Zandra Westfall, Sue Lancaster, Jeanie John and Donny Terry.

Arrangements are by Wheeler Mortuary of Portales.

Services are at 2 p.m. Thursday at Wheeler Mortuary Chapel in Portales.

Edna Goolsby, 93

Edna Goolsby, 93, of Portales, died Sunday, Dec. 7, 2003, at the home of her daughter.

She was born on June 10, 1910, in Pauls Valley, Okla., to Ada Bessie and James Edgar Horton.

She attended school in Olustee, Okla. She married Anison D. Goolsby on May 2, 1927, in Harmony, Okla. They moved to Fort Sumner, where she and her husband farmed until his death in 1980. She continued to live in Fort Sumner until 1990, when she moved to Broadmoore Acres in Portales. Family members said she enjoyed traveling, needle craft and gardening. She was a member of University Baptist Church.

She was preceded in death by her parents; a daughter, Wanda Lee Goff; four brothers, Arthur, Finis, Clarence, and Calvin Horton; three sisters, Ruby Horton, Minnie Lee Davis and Irene Peavey; and her husband.

Survivors include a son, Larry Goolsby (and wife, Leslie) of Gainesville, Texas; a daughter, Joye Ledgewood (Lee) of Portales; four brothers: J.E. Horton of Ardmore, Okla., and Wendell, Jim and Bruce Horton, all of Oklahoma City; a sister, Erma Wilson of Oklahoma City; seven grandchildren and their spouses, Tommy and Marcee Goff, Kenneth and Beverly Goff, Bobby and Gwen Goff, Donald and Pam Ledgewood, Sandra and Steve Harris, Lexie and Kevin Myers and Landall Goolsby; 6 great-grandchildren; and 14 great-great-grandchildren.

The Rev. Steve Smith will officiate the services.

Burial will be at Fort Sumner Cemetery.

Pallbearers will be Tommy, Bobby and Kenneth Goff, Donald Ledgewood, Steve Harris, Landall Goolsby, and Kevin Myers.

Arrangements are by Wheeler Mortuary of Portales.

Services are at 10 a.m. today at University Baptist Church in Portales.

Charles Knowles, 73

Mr. Charles Knowles of Portales, 73, of Portales died Sunday, Dec. 7, 2003, in Farmington.

He was born on June 6, 1930, in Waco, Texas, to Virginia and Fred R. Knowles.

He came to Portales as a young boy. He has driven trucks his entire life, and was out on the truck when he died. When he was a boy his first job was driving for Haskell Doyal. He served in the Air Force from 1949 until 1953. He has driven for many different men, including J.A. Ray, J.D. Ray, Earl Busby, Slim Ervin and Clifford Merrick. He has been self-employed for the past 20 years. He married Vita Hahn on Nov. 18, 1953. Family members said he was a loving and devoted husband and family man. He had nicknames for all of his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He loved trucks and had a collection of several model trucks. He was a member of the Emmanuel Baptist Church.

He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, M.R. Knowles and Fred Richard Knowles Jr.; a sister, Bessie Huens; and a son, Dennis.

Survivors include his wife; a son, Ron Knowles of Portales; three daughters, Brenda Hardin (and husband, Don) of Portales, Charlotte Blandford (Jerry) of Las Cruces and Carolyn Knowles of Portales; eight grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; a brother, R.B. Knowles of Portales; and two sisters, Betty Hahn and Mary Hahn, both of Portales.

The Rev. Walter Huber will officiate the services.

Burial will be at Portales Cemetery.

Pallbearers will be Justin Hardin, Steven Merrick, Cody Goehry, Bart Bronniman, Ronny Miller and Jeff Buttner.

Arrangements are by Wheeler Mortuary of Portales.

David Marley, 95

David Warnick Marley, 95, of Carlsbad, Calif., died Friday, Dec. 5, 2003.

He was born on June 23, 1908, in Lamesa, Texas, to William Samuel and Florence N. Christopher Marley.

He taught school in Curry, Roosevelt and Lea counties. For several years he was the principal of Lindsey Elementary School in Portales.

Survivors include his three sons, Gerald, Albert and J. Donovan Marley; nine grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and a great-great-grandchild.

Burial will be at Greenwood Mausoleum in San Diego, Calif.

Arrangements are by Featheringill Mortuary of San Diego.

Services are at 4 p.m. (PST) Saturday at Greenwood Mausoleum in San Diego.
