Chitwood, John

John W. Chitwood, 89, of Carlsbad, N.M., died Monday, Nov. 3, 2003, at his home.

He was born on Aug. 1, 1914, in Bellview.

He attended school in Ruth. He married Joyce Neely on July 6, 1933. In the 1940s he played minor league baseball. He farmed in Broadview until 1956 when he moved to Hobbs and worked for the Lea County Road Department until retiring at 72 years of age. He moved to Carlsbad in April of 2003. In Hobbs he was a member of the Independent Order of Odd Fellows and attended Bellview Baptist Church.

He was preceded in death by his wife; his parents; two sisters, Iva Vaughn and Edna Rutherford; two great-grandsons, Jeremy Rushing and Craig Chitwood; and a great-granddaughter, Tiffany Chitwood.

Survivors include a son, Stanley Chitwood (and wife, Juanita) of Silver City; a brother, Andrew Chitwood of Clovis; two granddaughters, Darlene Rushing (Darrell) of Carlsbad and Valerie Allen (Ted) of Kirtland; two grandsons, Bruce Chitwood (Debbie) of Silver City and Curtis Chitwood (Shannon) of Carlsbad; 15 great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren.

The Rev. Aaron Kayser will officiate the services.

Burial will be at Carlsbad Cemetery.

Pallbearers will be Dustin, Eric, Brandon, Curtis and Bruce Chitwood and Christopher Rushing. Arrangements are by Denton-Funchess Funeral Home of Carlsbad.
