Vandals shooting out car windows in Clovis

Someone enjoys shooting out car windows in Clovis, according to Clovis police.

Capt. Leon Morris of the Clovis Police Department said Curry County Crime Stoppers has offered a reward of up to $1,000 for information that leads to the arrest and conviction of those responsible for shooting at 45 cars between Nov. 11 and Thursday.

Morris said the incidents haven’t been localized but have happened all over the community and at many different times of the day and night. Those responsible don’t seem to be taking things from the cars but just causing damage.

“It’s been pretty much everywhere,” Morris said. “To my knowledge they’ve been shooting the windows and taking off; there have probably been some that were burglaries but not most of them.”

Morris said all of the car damage so far appears to be due to BB or pellet guns.

The window shooting incidents are reported by police as cases of criminal damage, a category that includes a number of different types of damage. However, of the 78 criminal damage cases so far this month, 45 of them have been due to the window shootings, and the window shooting incidents have hiked the number of criminal damage cases 45 percent over the criminal damage numbers for November of last year.

Morris said those who want to call in tips about who may be responsible can do so anonymously.

“The callers call in and leave the information that they have,” Morris said. “They are given a code number and every time they call back they use the code number to identify themsleves so they don’t need to leave their name, address or phone number.”

Those with tips on the incidents may call Crime Stoppers at 763-7000.
