TEXICO — Sophomore Lori Richardson had 15 kills and junior Amber Parmer added nine kills and nine blocks Saturday as Texico rallied with the final five points to edge Estancia 25-13, 13-25, 25-20, 12-25, 16-14 in the Class 2A Region B championship match at Texico Sports Arena.
Texico (18-5) improved to 4-2 against the Lady Bears this season, winning the last four matchups.
The Lady Spikers will face Hope Christian at 8:15 p.m. Thursdsay in a 2A state quarterfinal contest at Roswell Goddard High School. Estancia (21-6) faces Sandia Prep in a 3 p.m. matchup the same day at Roswell High.
“We know each other pretty well; we didn’t even go over a scouting report,” veteran Texico coach Mike Littlejohn quipped. “We didn’t play our best match, but the kids really stepped up when they had to.”
Texico advanced to the finals with a 25-14, 25-20, 25-8 win over Questa on Friday. Estancia won its semifinal match from Cimarron 25-20, 25-23, 25-22.
FORT SUMNER 3, ELIDA 0 — At Fort Sumner, Kayla Britain collected 10 kills and four aces Saturday and Fort Sumner captured the Class 1A Region B volleyball championship Saturday night with a 25-14, 25-20, 25-9 win over Elida.
Fort Sumner (20-4) advances to a 1A state quarterfinal match at 8:15 p.m. Thusday against Carrizozo at Roswell High. Elida (15-6) will play Tatum at 3 p.m. Thursday at Roswell Goddard in another quarterfinal.
“The first game was tough, closer than the score,” Vixens coach Lisa McMath said. “Both teams served aggressively.
But about midway in the first game, we started blocking better and they (Lady Tigers) started making mistakes.”
Sandy Fortner added seven kills, four blocks, four digs and two aces for the Vixens.
In Friday’s semifinals, Fort Sumner routed New Mexico School for the Deaf 25-1, 25-0, 25-4 and Elida knocked off Albuquerque Victory Christian 25-6, 25-16, 25-14.
