Jewel L. “J.L.” Jones, 68, of Amarillo, died Sunday, Oct. 26, 2003, at the VA hospital in Albuquerque.
He was born on Oct. 12, 1935, in Votaw, Texas, to Rob and Addie Judkins.
He was raised in Saratoga, Texas. He moved to Elkton, Ore. when he was 13 years old. He joined the Air Force in 1954 as an aircraft mechanic and retired in 1974. He served in France and Japan and was a Vietnam veteran. He and his family settled in Clovis where they lived from 1969 to 1992. They then moved to Lubbock and Roswell and for the past two years he was a resident of the VA Long Term Care Unit in Amarillo. He was known by close friends as “Jonesy.” Family members said he will be remembered as a man of honor and integrity with a loving and gentle manner and an excellent sense of humor. He loved motorcycles and airplanes and was a professional motorcycle racer during his younger years.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
He is survived by his wife, Toni Jones; three sons, Robert “Bob” Jones of Colorado City, Colo., Ronald “Ronnie” Jones of Las Vegas, Nev., and Gary Madrid of Portales; two daughters, Robin Fulfer of Dallas and Brianna Massey of Roswell; two brothers, H.L. “Junior” Jones and Billy Joe Judkins, both of Houston; two sisters, Edna Sanford of Orange, Mich., and Nora Dozier of Houston; and four great-grandchildren.
Burial will be at Santa Fe National Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to a local cancer society.
