Kathleen Betts, 69

Kathleen Betts, 69, of Portales, died Friday, Oct. 24, 2003, at Covenant Medical Center in Lubbock.

He was born on Sept. 7, 1934, in Birmingham, Ala., to Miss Sallie Mae Campbell.

She grew up in Smyrna, Tenn., where she attended schools. She married Charles William Betts on May 27, 1955, in Chatsworth, Ga. The family moved to Portales in 1972. She worked for several years as a cashier for Hometown Foods, Food Town, and La Tienda, before retiring in 2000. Family members said she was an avid Bingo player, had a “green thumb” for flower gardening and growing house plants and loved animals.

She was preceded in death by her mother; a son, Jerry Betts; and her husband, Charles Betts.

Survivors include a son, Charles D. Betts (and wife, Myrna) of Las Vegas, Nev.; two daughters, Sharon Warren (Darin) of Portales and Carmen White (Mike) of Friona; seven grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

Scott P. Reeves will officiate the services.

Honorary pallbearers will be Zachariah Betts, Jimmy Heflin, Sallie Mathews, Matthew Warren, Jennifer Macias, Carla Whitehorn, Kimberly Darnell and Chad Betts.

Arrangements are by Wheeler Mortuary of Portales.

Services are at 10 a.m. Thursday at Wheeler Chapel in Portales.

Winnie Kos, 87

Mrs. Winnie Mae Kos, of Scottsdale, Ariz., formerly of Portales, died Saturday, Oct. 25, 2003.

She was born on April 15, 1916, in Elida.

She was orphaned as an infant and raised by her grandmother and other relatives. Family members said she was a vivacious, outgoing woman who loved to dance; that she was kind and generous and everyone who met her, loved her.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Syl Kos.

Survivors include two sons, Don Kos and Steve Kos; two daughters, Barbara Hammond and Terri Kaufman; 12 grandchildren; and many great-grandchildren.

Arrangements are by desert Hills Mortuary of Scottsdale, Ariz.

Services are at 11:30 a.m. Thursday at Desert Hills Mortuary in Scottsdale, Ariz.
