Wolverines, Foxes continue to roll

EUNICE — The Texico Wolverines continued their domination of the regular-season schedule Friday night, piling up 435 total yards — all on the ground — in a 54-0 dismantling of Eunice in a District 3-1A matchup.

Texico (8-0, 3-0 district), ranked No. 1 in Class 1A, extended its shutout streak to 30 quarters and made short work of the Cardinals (2-7, 0-2) behind a balanced attack led by 146 yards rushing from junior Johnny Serrano.

Meantime, senior end Joe Zaikowski led the defensive effort with a fumble recovery and two of the Wolverines’ four quarterback sacks. John Nate Williams and Jared Curtis picked up the other sacks, while Garret Mayfield and Jesse Serrano each added a pass interception.

Senior Mark Peabody got Texico off to a fast start with touchdown runs of 25 and 20 yards in the first six-plus minutes. Johnny Serrano then made it 20-0 with a 6-yard TD run in the final minute of the period.

Quarterback Braden Vaughan added three touchdown runs — two in the second quarter and one in the third — while Cory Bell and Justin Garrison added scoring runs, the latter a 58-yarder with 4:23 to go in the game.

Peabody finished with 90 yards rushing and Vaughan added 81. Meantime, the Wolverines limited Eunice to just 54 total yards.

FORT SUMNER 61, QUESTA 14 — At Fort Sumner, sophomore Derek Dimitroff ran for 102 yards and two touchdowns on just six carries and returned a pass interception 30 yards for a score as the Foxes cruised to a District 2-1A victory.

Fort Sumner (7-2, 2-0 district), ranked second in 1A, overwhelmed the Wildcats in storming to a 47-0 halftime lead. Ten players had at least one carry for the Foxes, who piled up 475 of their 548 total yards on the ground.

Senior Roel Canales caught a 50-yard TD pass from Jameson West and ran 39 yards for a touchdown — his only reception and carry of the game. Dimitroff’s interception return came on the final play of the first half.

Questa (3-5, 0-2) got a pair of touchdown passes in the second half from quarterback Justin Martinez, who completed 7 of 20 passes in the game for 135 yards.

MELROSE 50, VAUGHN-CORONA 0 — At Melrose, sophomore Carlos Ruiz scored three first-quarter touchdowns and the Buffaloes made short work of Vaughn-Corona in wrapping up the six-man District 3 title.

Ruiz, who rushed eight times for 164 yards, scored on runs of 10, 20 and 50 yards to stake Melrose (7-2, 2-0 district) to a 22-0 lead at the quarter. Four different players added touchdowns in the second stanza as the Buffs ended the game at halftime on the NMAA’s 45-point lead rule for six-man games which goes into effect at that point.

Melrose expects to host either House or Roy in the first round of the six-man playoffs next week. Coach Dickie Roybal said the game will likely be played at 2 p.m. Saturday.

FLOYD 50, CLOVIS CHRISTIAN 0 — At Jim Hill Field, the visiting Broncos scored on seven of their eight possessions and ended the game midway through the third quarter on the 45-point lead rule.

Senior Chance Chenault caught a 32-yard, fourth-down, 32-yard scoring pass from sophomore Jerrod Long on the game’s first possession, then returned the favor with a 10-yard TD toss to Long to stake the Broncos to a 14-0 lead over the Eagles (2-4) at the quarter.

Brad Lee caught scoring passes of 26 yards from Chenault and 31 yards from Long and Eric Ervin added a 5-yard TD catch from Long to give Floyd (6-3) a 38-0 lead at halftime. Ervin then added touchdown runs of 9 and 10 yards in the third period.

Floyd expects to play at Logan on Friday night in the first-round of the six-man playoffs.
