Naz hands Steers first loss of season

NAZARETH — Senior quarterback Jordy Rowland threw for 278 yards and five touchdowns and Nazareth handed Farwell its first setback of the season, a 36-19 verdict Friday night in the District 4-1A opener for both teams.

Rowland, who completed 16 of 26 passes with no interceptions, threw TD strikes of 39 and 5 yards to Tyson Schulte and 26, 53 and 24 yards to Stuart Sheffy, the last one to Sheffy coming with 59 seconds left in the game.

Farwell (5-1) drove 59 yards in 11 plays on its first possession, ending in a 1-yard TD run by Rowdy Mitchell, for a 7-0 lead at the quarter. The Steers pulled to 15-13 late in the half when Jason Johnson capped a 14-play, 78-yard march with a 10-yard scoring toss to Grant Gregory, but a two-point conversion pass failed to keep the Swifts (4-3) in front 15-13 at the intermission.

Farwell’s final tally came on an 85-yard kickoff return by Robbie Tabb in the final minute.

Nazareth compiled a 383-212 edge in total offense. Rowland was also the Swifts’ leading rusher, carrying 15 times for 57 yards.

Marshall Edwards had 83 yards rushing on 16 attempts for Farwell, while Gregory caught three passes for 43 yards.

TEXICO 59, HAGERMAN 0 — The unbeaten Wolverines, ranked No. 1 in Class 1A and playing at home for the first time this season, got three touchdowns from senior Mark Peabody and two each from junior Johnny Serrano and sophomore Braden Vaughn in cruising past the Bobcats (1-5).

Texico (6-0), which has five consecutive shutouts and has outscored its opponents 237-6 for the season, gained 358 yards — all on the ground — and built a 21-0 lead by the end of the first quarter.

Vaughan led the rushing attack with seven carries for 93 yards, while Serrano gained 83 yards on seven totes and Peabody added 79 yards in eight attempts.
