The Clovis boys soccer team did something no other team has been able to do this season — score against Eldorado in district play.

It wasn’t nearly enough though, as the third-ranked Eagles broke the game open in the final 20 minutes en route to a 7-1 win Saturday in a District 4-5A match Saturday at the Yucca Soccer Complex.

Matt Witkowski scored a hat trick for the Eagles (13-0, 5-0 in district), who outshot Clovis 31-6.

Clovis (2-14, 0-5) cut Eldorado’s lead to 3-1 in the 60th minute when a hustling Adam Elliott kept alive a ball in the air and James Gant one-timed the bouncing ball into the right corner of the goal set up.

But the Joshua Jeppson scored on a breakaway less than two minutes later to restore order against a fatigued Clovis defense.

Clovis senior Dwayne Roberts was spectacular in goal until the final two minutes and finished with 26 saves.

Cat harriers win third

ROSWELL — The Clovis boys cross country team won its third meet of the season while senior Brian Romero won his first varsity individual title on Saturday at the 5-kilometer New Mexico Military Invitational at Roswell’s old airport.

The Clovis boys placed five runners in the top 10 to snag the team title. Romero won the race — three times around on a flat course that includes about 100 yards of airport runway — in 16:21.

The Clovis varsity girls finished second to Artesia.
