Floyd feels like home to Elida

FLOYD — It’s safe to say the Elida High volleyball team is more than comfortable playing at Floyd High School. Unfortunately for the host Lady Broncos, Elida needed only four games to prove just that.

The visiting Lady Tigers got their second District 3-1A win Thursday night, beating Floyd 25-15, 25-14, 22-25, 25-15.

Elida (7-3, 2-0) practiced at FHS when its gym was in the first stages of renovation. With EHS still waiting on seating to be installed, Darrell Chenault and his team are returning to that process with a practice today at Floyd.

“They treat us good,” Chenault said of Floyd’s willingness to help out the neighbor high school. “They let us do whatever we want.”

As its reward, Floyd only received another district loss on the record. The Lady Broncos are 0-4 in District 3-1A, 3-8 overall. Elida made quick work of Floyd in the first two games, then fell short in the third game — thanks to a combination of Elida playing some younger players and Floyd increasing its level of play.

“I think Sean (Wootton) told them to let it all hang out because they hit hard,” Chenault said of the third game. “They played well. We had better quit overlooking them.”

After the third game, though, Wooton felt the Lady Broncos were satisfied with taking one game from Elida and never sustained their level of play.

“I felt they kind of regressed,” Wootton said. “They won the third game and then relaxed and didn’t come out and attack.”

Floyd returns to action Saturday at the Melrose Tournament, starting with a 10:30 a.m. match against Eunice. Elida has the weekend off, but has three games in four days next week — Monday at Dora, Tuesday at Vaughn and Thursday against Fort Sumner.
