Leola Askew, 89

Leola “Pat” Askew, 89, of Portales, died Saturday, Sept. 27, 2003, at Heartland Continuing Care Center.

She was born on Aug. 4, 1914, in Oklahoma, to Lela and Mendle Phillips.

She attended schools in Granite, Okla., and lived in Mangum, Okla., the Richland Community and Oregon before moving to Dora in 1946. She moved to Golden Acres in Portales in 1983. She volunteered as a Pink Lady at Roosevelt General Hospital and was a Sunday school teacher for many years. She also worked at the Inlow Youth Camp during the summer months. Family members said she enjoyed sewing, crocheting afghans, cooking and making wedding cakes, arranging and growing flowers, singing and camping.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Denver C. Askew; two brothers as small children; and three sisters: Lora Ashby, Christine Marken and one as a child.

Survivors include four daughters, Wanell Simmons of Lorenzo, Texas, Fannie Gresham of Bartlett, Tenn., Lela Victor (and husband, Wayne) of Dora and Kay Allison (Lee) of Roswell; 10 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; a brother, M.B. Phillips Jr. (Arlene), of Vancouver, Wash.

The Revs. Bobby Fuller, Steve Smith and Kenneth Dunsworth will officiate the services.

Burial will be at Mt. Zion Cemetery in Dora.

Pallbearers will be Donald Kirksey, Ryan Allison, Shane Victor, Kirk Victor, Buster Tucker, Tyrel Victor, Blake Victor, Kirk Dean Spears, and Chance Tucker.

Arrangements are by Wheeler Mortuary of Portales.

Services are at 2 p.m. today at University Baptist Church in Portales.

John Howard, 85

Mr. John O. Howard Jr., 85, of Amarillo, died Saturday, Sept. 27, 2003, in Amarillo.

He was born on April 28, 1918, in Greenfield, Mo.

He moved to Clovis when he was 6 months old. He went to work for the Santa Fe Railroad in 1936 and served from 1941 until 1945 with the Headquarters Squadron 45th Air Depot Group of the U.S. Army. He returned to work with the railroad and retired after 43 years of service. He married Ruth McDonald on June 1, 1946. Family members said he was an avid golfer and bowler. He and his wife traveled with the Good Sam’s Club of Clovis for many years.

Survivors include his wife; two sons, Johnny Howard (and wife, Katie) of Carrollton, Texas, and Robert “Bobby” Howard (Debby) of Amarillo; four grandchildren, Jonathan Howard of Carrollton, Texas, Tisha Nicewarner of Waco, Texas, and Sarah Smoot (Will) and Emily Howard (Jon Revette), all of Amarillo; and eight great-grandchildren, Calvin, Madeline and Jackson Smoot and Isaac and Solomon Revette, all of Amarillo and Angel, James and Imani of Waco, Texas.

Cremation has taken place.

Jon Forrest will officiate the services.

Burial will be at Lawn Haven Memorial Gardens in Clovis.

A second memorial service will be held at 9:30 a.m. (CDT) Sunday at Buchanan Street United Methodist Church in Amarillo with Bill Wade officiating.

Arrangements are by Boxwell Brothers Funeral Directors of Amarillo.

Services are at 2 p.m. Thursday at First Christian Church in Clovis.

Marilyn Huber, 72

Marilyn L. Huber, 72, of Portales, died Saturday, Sept. 27, 2003, in Portales.

She was born on April 24, 1931, in Roswell, to Alta and Glen Wheeler.

She was named Miss Roswell in 1947. She attended Southwestern University in Georgetown, Texas, and the University of Colorado, where she received a bachelor’s degree and a master’s degree. She married Bob Huber on June 21, 1951, in Raton. They lived in Roswell for several years before settling in Santa Fe in 1963. She began teaching at Sweeney High School until 1990 when she and her husband moved to Portales.

She taught at Eastern New Mexico University and Pep High School in Pep, Texas. She was a literary agent for her husband and her daughters. She was a member of the National Education Association.

Family members said her hobbies included computers, writing short stories and painting fine china. She enjoyed collecting fruit jars, Indian artifacts and other items.

She was preceded in death by her parents; a son, Glen Huber; a brother, Clarence Wheeler; and a sister, Evelyn Hobson.

Survivors include her husband; two daughters, Tracy LeCocq and Holly Huber, both of Roswell; four grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.
