Lady Cats win district volleyball opener

HOBBS — The Clovis High Lady Wildcats got off on the right foot in District 4-5A play on Tuesday, sweeping Hobbs 25-21, 25-19, 25-19 to improve to 11-1 for the season.

The Lady Cats controlled much of the match, although they fell behind by six points in the second game. Clovis responded with a 13-1 run to close out the Lady Eagles (5-7).

No other particulars were available on the match at presstime.

Clovis also won the junior varsity match 25-18, 25-14.

The Lady Cats host Eldorado on Saturday in a key district matchup at Rock Staubus Gym, scheduled for 11 a.m.

Hobbs blanks CHS girls soccer team — The Clovis girls soccer team held its own for most of a half, but when it starting raining goals the roof caved in on them.

Senior Lezlie Varner scored four goals and Hobbs broke away from a scoreless tie with less than five minutes left in the half, pulling away to a 10-0 victory at Hobbs in the District 4-5A opener for both squads.

“The first 35 minutes we played great,” first-year CHS coach Larry Jones said. “After the half, we fell apart and the wheels just went in four different directions.”

Hobbs (8-3-1) was kept in check for most of the first half by some solid goaltending from CHS senior Jessica Doss. “Jessica Doss made some great saves in the first half,” Jones said.

The Lady Eagles took Clovis (1-10) out of the match quickly after the intermission, scoring four goals in the first 2:06. Defender Brittani Francke’s goal with 18:38 left ended the match on the 10-goal lead mercy rule.

Sunny Evans added a hat trick for Hobbs, including the icebreaker with 4:11 to go in the half on an assist from Ryanne Arnold. Varner then scored unassisted just 13 seconds later.

Arnold added a pair of goals in the second half for the Lady Eagles.

Hobbs also took the junior varsity preliminary 5-1, with freshman Patrice Dykes scoring the Clovis goal when she lobbed a shot from about 25 yards out over the Hobbs goalkeeper.
