Mrs. Frances Alires, 77, of Portales, died Tuesday, Sept. 2, 2003, at Heartland Continuing Care Center in Portales.

She was born on Dec. 6, 1925, in Beth, to Lucy and Phil Martinez.

She spent most of her early life in the Fort Sumner and Las Vegas areas. She married Joe Alires on March 25, 1940, in Briton, Colo. They made their home in a number of locations before moving to Portales in 1966. Family members said she was a faithful member of the Kingdom Hall in Clovis and got great satisfaction from teaching others about the Bible. Family members said she enjoyed crocheting and painting and was a wonderful companion to her husband and a loving mother and grandmother to her son and grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; and a brother, Robert Martinez.

She is survived by her husband; a son, Richard Alires (and wife, Billie) of Leesburg, Va.; three grandchildren, Steven, Chris and Sheryl; two great-grandsons; three sisters, Rosetta Pettijohn of Sandy, Ore., Nancy Seal of Odessa, Texas, and Helen Garcia of Phoenix; two brothers, Hilary Martinez of Beaver Creek, Ore., and Gene Martinez of Sandy, Ore.

Nat Gomez will officiate the services.

Arrangements are by Wheeler Mortuary of Portales.
