Funck scores twice in Zia victory

PLAINVIEW, Texas — Freshman midfielder Anna Funck scored a pair of goals Saturday as Eastern New Mexico University’s first-year women’s soccer program claimed its first win by blanking Wayland Baptist 4-0.

Funck scored an unassisted goal near the end of the first half to put the Zias (1-2) in front. She added another unassisted goal in the 73rd minute, making it 3-0.

The Zias got their second goal early in the second half when a WBU player knocked the ball into the Pioneers’ own net. The final goal was scored by Kara Williams in the 82nd minute, on an assist by Sarah Sanchez.

Carolyn Vincent recorded the shutout in goal for the Zias. ENMU had a 13-3 advantage in shot attempts over the Pioneers (0-3).

Cross country

CANYON, Texas — Eastern New Mexico University’s men had five of the top 14 runners on Friday and posted a team victory in the Buffalo Stampede cross country meet, hosted by West Texas A&M.

Ricardo Hernandez finished third for the Greyhounds in 28 minutes, 23 seconds over the five-mile run, while Orlando Sanchez followed in fourth place in 29:37. ENMU finished with 39 points to 45 for Angelo State, with five full teams competing.

The ENMU women were fifth out of six teams with 97 points in a competition won by South Plains College. The leading runner for the Zias was freshman Brandi Cron, who placed eighth in a time of 21:51 over five kilometers.
