Adams St. wins over Eastern

ALAMOSA, Colo. — Eastern New Mexico University’s first-year women’s soccer team played competitively against host Adams State on Sunday, but the Zias couldn’t find the net in a 2-0 loss to the Grizzlies.

ENMU went 0-2 in the three-day, three-team round-robin, also losing on Saturday to College of the Southwest 3-2. The Grizzlies won the first match of the weekend over CSW 4-0 on Friday.

Freshman forward Sarah Johnson, who compiled a hat trick in Friday’s win, broke the scoring ice against the Zias by converting a free kick from 25 yards which just got over the reach of ENMU goalkeeper Carolyn Vincent and just under the crossbar.

Johnson assisted on the Grizzlies’ other goal early in the second half, scored by Sara Lyles about three minutes into the period.

While Adams dominated, ENMU coach Travis McCorkle was pleased with the effort.

“The quality of (Adams State’s) shots was not really that good,” he said. “That’s a testament to our midfielders and defenders. They forced Adams State to take some bad shots.”

Vincent finished with 14 saves for the Zias.

Scanlan adds player — Jamal Washington, a 6-foot-3, 210-pound guard from Victor Valley (Calif.) Community College, has signed to play basketball for ENMU men’s coach Shawn Scanlan.

Washington, from Pomona, Calif., averaged 15.2 points and 6.1 rebounds as a sophomore at Victor Valley, shooting 46 percent from the field and 71 percent from the free throw line en route to all-conference honors.

“He gives us some flexibility,” Scanlan said. “He’s a true combo guard — he can probably play any of the three (perimeter) positions for us.

“He’s a good ballhandler, he can score the basketb all when he needs to, and he also has an innate ability to see open teammates.”

Washington plans to major in business at Eastern.

The Greyhounds are coming off their first Lone Star Conference South Division championship in 2003, going 11-1 in division play and 20-8 overall.
