Zia soccer wins exhibition

Freshman midfielder Anna Funck scored a hat trick Saturday as the first-year Eastern New Mexico University soccer program completed its preseason scrimmage schedule with a 3-0 victory over the Lubbock Ice club team at the ENMU soccer field.

The Zias, who finished the preseason with a 1-2 record, open the regular season against College of the Southwest at 3 p.m. on Friday in the Adams State College tournament in Alamosa, Colo. They will play Adams State the following day.

Funck opened the scoring in the 27th minute with a tap-in at the right post after receiving a pass from junior midfielder Nicole Johnson. Neither team scored the rest of the half as Lubbock Ice goalkeeper Lauren Riggs made four saves.

Riggs was replaced for the second half by Christy Odaz, who registered three saves over the final 45 minutes. Meantime, ENMU freshman goalie Carolyn Vincent played the entire match and earned the shutout with five saves.

Funck added her second goal in the 71st minute on sophomore Leah Berry’s pass from midfield off a free kick. Funck then added her final tally on a 15-yard shot from the left side of the penalty area off a lengthy pass from Johnson.

Funck earned her hat trick on just three shots. The Zias finished with a 15-12 edge in total shots, including 11-5 in shots on goal.
