Barb Lumley qualifies for national event

Barbara Lumley of Clovis has qualified as part of a five-person team for the gross portion of the 2003 Buick Scramble National golf tournament Oct. 8-12 in Orlando, Fla.

Four amateurs and a club pro comprise each team. There will be 133 teams in Orlando, with the field pared to 24 teams for the final round on Oct. 11.

Awards will be given out the following day.

Lumley’s team also includes Rio Mimbres Country Club pro Scott Peters of Deming, Joe Morales and son Jason of Deming and Gary Whitehead of Truth or Consequences. They qualified for the national at Twin Warriors Golf Course in Bernalillo on Aug. 7, tying another team with scores of 60 (gross) and 57 (net).

Based on a coin flip, Lumley’s team earned a berth in the gross division and the other team is going in the net division.

Lumley said she knew Whitehead because she had taught school with his wife in T or C. She replaced another son of Joe Morales on the team after he had to withdraw before the tournament at Bernalillo.

“I was more nervous than I’ve ever been in my life,” Lumley said.

The national event will be played on three courses, she said — Disney Palm, Disney Magnolia and Falcon’s Fire.

“We’re hoping to get to the (final) 24, at least,” she said. “It’s the biggest tournament I’ve ever played in. It’s going to be hard for us, but if everybody just plays steady golf I think we’ll be OK.”

Lumley is the wife of Clovis Municipal Golf Course pro Jim Lumley.
