Mrs. Edith Wheeler McGuffin, 89, of Albuquerque, died Monday, May 19, 2003, at Stardust Place in Albuquerque.

She was born on May 13, 1914, in Bethel, to Nina and Ernest N. Wheeler.

She graduated from Portales High School in 1933. She attended Eastern New Mexico Junior College in Portales and was a member of the first graduating class in 1935. She went on to complete a degree in music and art at Kansas State Teacher’s College in 1937. She taught vocal music and art at Lovington High School until 1940. She married L.W. McGuffin on Sept. 1, 1940, and because of school rules prohibiting marriage, she had to resign from teaching. She taught third grade at L.L. Brown, Steiner and James Schools from 1966 until 1978. She was a member of the Methodist Church.

She was preceded in death by her parents; a brother, E.N. Wheeler Jr .; and two sisters, Vera Audeen Wheeler and Ruth Ann Wheeler.

She is survived by her husband; three daughters, Nina Harper of Seal Beach, Calif., Anne MacFie (and husband, Paul Elsey) of Stanton, Ky., and Deana McGuffin of Albuquerque; a granddaughter, Trina Woodall (and husband, Brady) of Austin, Texas; and a great-grandson, Ian Woodall of Austin, Texas.

The Rev. Harry Riser will officiate the services.

Burial wil be at Portales Cemetery.

Pallbearers will be Eldin Cooper, Scott Reeves, Otis Davis, Marlin Poynor, Howard Overby and Dewey Langston.

Honorary bearers will be C.H. Justus, Jack Carr, Dr. Jack Williamson, Melvin Lovorn, Preston and Robert Dunn, Cecil Cook, Buck Bigler, Hugh Coslett, Leo Dement, Ernest Leach and James Woodall.

Arrangements are by Wheeler Mortuary of Portales.
