Church of God in Christ convocation in full swing

Several hundred pastors, church leaders and worshipers from across the state have been meeting in Clovis this week for the New Mexico Churches of God in Christ annual Holy Convocation.

The convocation scheduled through Saturday is being hosted by Clovis’ First Church of God in Christ, 3400 Vinton St.

Bishop W. Charles Green, who also serves as the state prelate for the New Mexico Churches of God in Christ, is pastor of the Clovis church.

Theme for the six-day convocation is “Consecrated for the Rapture.”

Evening services during the convocation begin at 7:30 p.m.

Today has been designated as the Official Day, honoring Bishop Green as the church’s state prelate. Elder James L’Keith Jones will be the noon featured speaker. Bishop W.H. Watson of Lubbock will be the evening speaker.

Bishop Green was appointed as pastor of the First Church of God in Christ by Bishop J.W. Taylor on March 17, 1957. Prior to becoming the pastor of the Clovis church, he pastored churches in Tucumcari, Artesia and Roswell.

He had the honor of being ordained as an elder in the Church of God in Christ at the hand of the denomination’s founder, the late Bishop Charles Harrison Mason.

In August 1996, Green was consecrated to the office of bishop and installed as the jurisdictional prelate of the New Mexico Ecclesiastical Jurisdiction by the presiding bishop of the Church of God in Christ.

A highlight of the convocation will be the W.C. Griffin Scholarship Banquet to be held at 3 p.m. Friday at The Landing on Cannon Air Force Base.

Banquet tickets cost $30 per person and may be purchased by contacting Frances Rhoden at 762-2050 or Dianne Nance at 763-3770.

“The banquet is considered a highlight of our convocation because through the awarding of scholarships to deserving youth, our mission to ‘go ye into all the world’ can be fulfilled,” Rhoden said.

“It’s our prayer and hope that through these scholarships, ministers, missionaries, teachers, doctors and even lawyers will come forth for the upbuilding of God’s kingdom,” she said.

The W.C. Griffin Scholarship Fund was named for the late bishop who had served as the former state prelate for New Mexico, Rhoden said.

“This was a part of his vision for the New Mexico jurisdiction and is being carried out by our present prelate,” she said.
