Serving Clovis, Portales and the Surrounding Communities
Since he was 10 years old, Jerry Banister says he has been aware of his “angels.”
Now, as an adult, Banister makes his living as a building contractor in the Albuquerque area and travels throughout the country, conducting workshops designed to teach participants how to tap into the divine wisdom of one’s “angels” or “spiritual guides.”
“I listen to my angels, and I follow that impression all the time,” said Banister, who was born and raised in Clovis. “It always falls in place. People get so caught up in what they’re doing, they don’t listen to their own mind and thoughts or their angels.”
The seminar, which costs $10 per person, is nondenominational, Banister said. The seminar will be held at 2 p.m. and 7 p.m. Monday at the Clovis Holiday Inn.
Banister said he learned his spiritual techniques at the Americana Leadership College in Oceola, Iowa, which is headquartered in Washington, D.C., and has branches in Texas and Puerto Rico. The college is associated with the Inner Peace Movement, a non-profit organization which teaches people how to be more in touch with the angels who are working with them.
The angel workshop will teach people how to recognize their angels and other facets of spiritual reality, Banister said.
He said there will also be “some spiritual healing,” he said.
“There are three types of healing — mental healing, physical healing and healing of the spirit,” he said. “Everyone will have a chance to feel their angels come close, and they’ll feel the chills when they do.”
Some church leaders questioned Banister’s understanding of angels and how angels work.
The Rev. David Markham, pastor of Victory Life Church in Portales, said people should be cautious.
“I don’t believe our assignment is to communicate with angels,” he said. “They hearken to voice of the Word. I don’t believe in communicating with angels, and if you’re not careful, you can give place to the wrong spirit. There are many voices in the world, and you can be deceived. An angel’s job is to be a minister to you. They are there for our protection.”
The Rev. Frank Sherman, pastor of Westminster Presbyterian Church in Clovis, said angels in the biblical sense are a reality.
“Angels appear in the earliest pages of the Bible, and I believe they are around today in many guises,” he said. “However, I’m not sure that angels are assigned to people like overseers. Also, I’m not sure any mortal has the ability to count the number of angels assigned to anyone — if in fact they are.”
Banister claims to have had numerous encounters with angels since his childhood.
“The sound went out on our TV,” he said. “My mother had just brought it back from the shop. As I was standing there in our living room, my angel told me to open the back of the TV.”
Banister did as his inner voice told.
“The angel then told me, ‘Now plug it in and look inside — see which tube doesn’t light up.’ Sure enough, there was one tube that didn’t light up, so the angel said, ‘Take it out,’ and I did it,” Banister said. “Then the angel told me to open the front door and look outside. There was a TV repair truck across the street. I went over to it and told the repairman that the sound was out on our TV, and I showed him the tube. The repairman looked at it and said, ‘Yeah, that’s the sound tube.’ He tested it, and it was bad. Then he gave me a new one at no extra charge.”
