July blanked in precip so far

Clovis recorded its wettest June in four decades last month. Late Wednesday, it was a few hours from potentially recording its first dry July in almost a century of record keeping.

National Weather Service officials said the city has not recorded any measurable precipitation since June 29.

NWS records show the city has averaged 2.66 inches of rain in July over the past 90 years. Clovis has never recorded a dry July, according to NWS records. July is normally the city’s second-wettest month.

Today’s forecast predicts Clovis’ skies will be partly cloudy, offering a slight chance of rain.

New Mexico-American Water Co.’s operations manager, Jim Bonner, said hot, dry weather is a major reason the company on Wednesday asked customers to stop watering lawns and reduce all water usage.

The average high temperature in July in Clovis is 92 degrees, NWS forecaster David Craft said. The average high for this July is 93.8.

Clovis recorded 5.97 inches of rain last month, the wettest June since 1963 when it received 6.16 inches of precipitation.

Normally, Clovis’ wettest month is August, with an average of 2.97 inches of precipitation.
