Jeff and Phyllis Putney said it was just a “coincidence” they ended up in Clovis, N.M., after spending most of their lives in Clovis, Calif., a city in California’s San Joaquin Valley.
Jeff worked for the Post Office in nearby Fresno and Phyllis worked in a local doctor’s office. But when Jeff retired recently they began to look for a town with cleaner air.
The couple moved to New Mexico in June.
“Los Angeles is number one for having the worst smog in the state – and Fresno and Bakersfield are tied for number two. We also wanted to find a house for around $150,000. It wasn’t until I got as far as New Mexico that I found cities that fit both those criteria,” Jeff said.
In April Jeff came out for a look around and liked what he saw. Actually, it wasn’t the name of the town, so much as the clean air, affordable living and friendly people that help him and Phyllis make a decision.
“We’ve got great neighbors and there’s even an Air Force base here, where I can visit the commissary if I want. It’s really a nice little community. Of course, we miss our kids and we plan to go back to California at least twice a year,” he said.
