Pius Gibson

Pius Olney Gibson III, 45, of Portales, died Wednesday, June 25, 2003, at his home.

He was born July 3, 1957, in Daytona Beach, Fla., to Dolores and Pius Olney Gibson Jr.

He grew up in Jackson, Miss. He was a 1975 graduate of Forrest Hill High School in Jackson. He served in the U.S. Navy for two years. He was an X-ray technician for 20 years until he became disabled. His lived in Mississippi for many years. He moved to Henderson, Nev., in the late 1980s before moving to Portales about four years ago.

He was preceded in death by his father.

Survivors include a son, Pius Gibson IV of Portales; a daughter, Chandra Gibson of Portales; his mother; two brothers, David A. Gibson of Henderson and Stephen Gibson of Kingman, Ariz.; and a sister, Camille Boone of Henderson.

No services are planned.

Burial will be at South Nevada Veteran’s Memorial Cemetery in Boulder City, Nev.

Wheeler Mortuary of Portales is handling arrangements.

Juana Martinez

Juana Martinez, 59, of Portales, died Wednesday, June 25, 2003, at Covenant Medical Center in Lubbock.

She was born Jan. 26, 1944, in Toyahvale, Texas, to Gavina and Jose Hernandez.

She married Tranquilino A. Martinez on March 17, 1981, in Pecos, Texas. They moved to Portales in 1986. She was a member of St. Helen Catholic Church, Los Abuelitos at La Casa de Buena Salud and Portales Senior Citizens. Family members said she enjoyed playing bingo, making ceramic projects and watching her grandchildren play sports.

She was preceded in death by her parents; a brother, Tim Hernandez; two sisters, Mary Rede and Margarita Natividad; and three grandchildren.

Survivors include her husband; two sons, Ignacio Guevas of Portales and Crecencio Rede Jr. of Odessa, Texas; a stepson, Jose Hernandez of Portales; four daughters, Connie Duran, Josie Maestas and Anna Baltazar, all of Portales, and Terry Gannon of Dallas; 10 grandchildren; and a brother, Jose Hernandez of Pecos.

A rosary is scheduled for 7 p.m. today at St. Helen Catholic Church in Portales.

Mass of the Resurrection will be celebrated at 9 a.m. Saturday at St. Helen Catholic Church. Father Tobin Hitt will be the celebrant.

Burial will be at Portales Cemetery.

Pallbearers will be Matthew Maestas, Joel Baltazar, Israel Hernandez, Jose Hernandez, Mario Dominguez and Greg Gannon.

Honorary bearers will be Tommy Maestas, Johnny Baltazar, Joel Baltazar, Harvey Cuevas and Mingo Duran.
