Stormy weather played tag in and around the Portales area early Thursday morning, dumping more than an inch of rain in some places but teasing the city with only a trace.
Jack Self, who works at the New Mexico Christian Children’s Home, said the children’s home “didn’t get much rain at all,” but their property about three miles north and east of Portales collected “between an inch and 1 1/2 inches of rain.”
Joan Martinez-Terry, Portales city clerk, said the city “didn’t get enough rain to cause any problems.”
The National Weather Service reported only a trace of precipitation for Portales.
However, Greg and Stephanie Booker recorded .70 of an inch of rain at their home nearly three miles east of the Wal-Mart Supercenter.
Cannon Air Force Base reported 2.11 inches of rainfall early Thursday. Clovis reported 2.32 inches, with significant street flooding that left at least a dozen vehicles stranded.
Surrounding areas also received fairly significant amounts of moisture.
Mary Bright of Melrose said her rain gauge collected 1.62 inches of rain “and a little hail, but I don’t think it did much damage.”
Gil Patschke of Farwell reported 1 1/2 inches of rainfall just across the border.
The National Weather Service in Lubbock recorded an inch of rainfall with hail in Lazbuddie, and .75 of an inch, also with hail, in Muleshoe.
Clovis weather observer Nancy McPherson said she received 2.32 inches of rainfall, bringing the monthly total to 5.73 inches and the yearly accumulation to 7.69 inches.
The last time the Clovis-Portales received more than two inches of rainfall in a day was Aug. 20, 2002, when it poured 2.83 inches. Nine days later on Aug. 29, the area picked up another 1.74 inches of precipitation, according to the National Weather Service in Albuquerque.
The highest precipitation in one day came on Sept. 7, 1957, when it dumped 5.26 inches of rain in the area, according to the National Weather Service.
