Herman Baxley, 54

Mr. Herman Gene Baxley, 54, of Longmont, Colo., died Tuesday, June 10, 2003, at Peaks Care Center in Longmont.

He was born on Jan. 17, 1949, in Portales, to John and Ruth Stanley Baxley.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and a brother, Johnny Baxley.

He is survived two brothers, Mel Baxley of La Vegas, Nev., and Ray Baxley of Longmont, Colo.

Cremation will take place. Arrangements are by Erlinger Cremation and Funeral Service in Longmont, Colo. No services will be held.

Delva Massey, 83

Ms. Delva Marie Walls Massey, 83, of Denton, Texas, formerly of Dora, died Monday, June 16, 2003, at Denton Good Samaritan Village.

She was born on Jan. 29, 1920, in Blackwell, Texas, to Burse Noel and Eunice Ruth “Russell’ Walls.

She married John Henry “Pat” Massey on Dec. 23, 1937, in Clovis. She was a member of the New Hope Baptist Church and was a homemaker.

She was preceded in death by her husband; her parents; a son, Jerry Massey; two brothers; and a sister.

She is survived by two daughters, Tammy Walker (and husband, Tommy) of Denton, Texas, and JoAnn Stidham (and husband, Johnny) of Oklahoma City; a sister, Bertha Greathouse of San Angelo, Texas; five grandchildren, Shawn Martin, Bruce Walker, Steve and Gary Allen and Robin Keegan; 23 great-grandchildren; and six great-great-grandchildren.

Visitation is scheduled from 6 p.m. (CDT) until 7 p.m. today at Mulkey-Mason Funeral Home in Denton, Texas.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Alzheimers Disease Association, 7610 Stemmons Fwy., Ste. No. 600, Dallas, Texas 75247. Arrangements are by Mulkey-Mason, Jack Schmitz and Son Funeral Home of Denton, Texas. Services are at 1 p.m. (CDT) Thursday at Blackwell Cemetery in Blackwell, Texas.

Frederick Meier, 62

Mr. Frederick Robert Meier, 62, of Texico, a farmer, died Monday, June 16, 2003, at his home.

He was born on Dec. 11, 1940, in Lubbock, to Frank R. and Mary Elizabeth Sawyer Meier.

He moved to Curry County in 1957. He was a member of the National Guard and Immanuel Lutheran Church.

He was preceded in death by his father; and a brother, Frank Kenneth Meier.

He is survived by his mother; a sister, Valeria Smith of Clovis; two brothers, Ernest W. Meier of Centennial, Colo. and Gary L. Meier of Spring, Texas; two sons, Robert Meier of Portales and Timothy Meier (and wife, Tera) of Portland, Ore.; and a daughter, Teresa Meier of Minneapolis, Minn.

Scott Blazek will officiate the services.

Burial will be at Lawn Haven Memorial Gardens in Clovis.

Pallbearers will be Wayne Upton, Gus Meier, Richard Sawyer, Edsel Young, Carter Dubois and James Steward. Memorial contributions may be made to the Pleasant Hill Fire Department. Arrangements are by Muffley Funeral Home of Clovis. Services are at 9 a.m. Thursday at Lawn Haven Memorial Gardens in Clovis.

Charles Nassif, 56

Mr. Charles A. Nassif, 56, of Montego Bay, Jamaica, died Tuesday, June 10, 2003, on his yacht in Montego Bay.

He was born on March 1, 1947.

He graduated from Highland High School and Eastern New Mexico University. He served in the Marine Corps during the Vietnam era and was a service officer with the VFW. He was a member of the Montego Bay Yacht Club and a theoretical physicist for the University of the West Indies, family members said.

Family members said one of his proudest accomplishments was going 469 days wearing shorts and a T-shirt.

He is survived by his wife, Jan Nassif of Montego Bay; a son, Charles K. Nassif (and wife, Carol) of Fife, Wash.; a daughter, Elizabeth Parker (and husband, Alan) of Portales; two brothers, Fred Nassif and Martin Nassif, both of Florida; and four grandchildren, Brittany and Shawna Parker and Anastacia and Troy Nassif. Cremation will follow visitation at Sunset Memorial Park in Albuquerque.

Arrangements are by French Mortuary of Albuquerque. Services are from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. today at French Mortuary, University Boulevard Chapel in Albuquerque.

Toynette Stockard, 87

Mrs. Toynette Stockard, 87, of Portales, died Friday, June 13, 2003, in Dallas.

She was born on Aug. 14, 1915, in Brookline, Greene County, Mo., to Maude and William Batson.

She married Harold Stockard on Aug. 27, 1933. Early in their marriage they visited one of Harold’s uncles on a farm in Portales. Family members said they fell in love with the fertile soil, and the fact that there were no rocks to bother with. Rocks were a problem in Missouri. They bought a farm and raised a family. She was a member of the local congregation of Jehovah’s Witnesses. Family members said she loved nature and scenery, especially sunsets and clouds.

She was preceded in death by her parents; two brothers, Everett and Herman Batson; a sister, Olive Stockard; a son, Jimmie Dale Stockard; three grandchildren; and her husband, Harold.

She is survived by two sons, Marvin “Sonny” Stockard of Big Spring, Texas, and Vern Stockard of Portales; four daughters, Evelyn Isbell (and husband, Wayne) of Dallas, Henrietta Simcik (and husband, Tom) of Denver, Patsy Hisey (and husband, Randy) of Albuquerque and Rhonda Garcia (and husband, Ramon) of Portales; 20 grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren; and a great-great-grandchild.

Tom Gilmore will officiate the services.

Burial will be at Portales Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Marvin Stockard, Bret and Kyle Isbell, Todd and Jeffery Simcik, Anthony and Albert Garcia and Colton English. Arrangements are by Wheeler Mortuary of Portales. Services are at 11 a.m. Thursday at Wheeler Mortuary Chapel in Portales.

Garland Tipps, 84

Mr. Garland Emory Tipps, Ph.D., 84, of Portales, died Sunday, June 15, 2003, at his home.

He was born on March 12, 1919, in Unionville, Tenn., to Floyd and Jonnye Waggoner Tipps.

He grew up in Tennessee. He attended Martin College in Pulaski, Tenn. He married Frances Frater on March 17, 1941, in Pulaski. He served in the Army during World War II. He attended George Peabody University in Nashville earning a bachelor’s and a master’s degree in 1946. From 1947 until 1949 he was Dean of Men at Martin College. He moved to Clovis in 1949. In 1954 he began teaching at Eastern New Mexico University. By 1965 he had developed a marriage and family course, which recorded over 12,000 students over the years, family members said.

In 1965 he earned a doctoral degree George Peabody College of Vanderbilt University in Nashville, Tenn. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church.

He was preceded in death by his wife; a son, Michael Floyd Tipps; and his parents.

He is survived by his children, Mary Garland Sumner of Fort Pierce, Fla., David Tipps (and wife, Patricia Pereira) of Jupiter Farms, Fla., and Alan Tipps (and wife, Sherri) of Portales; five grandchildren, Kristi Deutsch, Michael Tipps, Joshua and Tayler Lucero and Tim Pereira; a great-granddaughter, Tessa Deutsch; a brother, Frank Wayne Bell of Hobbs.

Alan Conner will officiate the services. Burial will be at Portales Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Alan, David and Michael Tipps, Chris Harrell, Bart Walker and Kenny Howe. Arrangements are by Wheeler Mortuary of Portales. Services are at 2 p.m. Friday at Central Christian Church in Portales.
