Report cards

Students and parents may pick up student report cards beginning June 2 at the junior high school office. All lunch fees, book charges and library fines must be paid before report cards are released. Summer hours are 7:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Monday through Thursday and 7:30 a.m. to noon on Friday.

Eighth-grade promotion

Students and families gathered at Greyhound Arena on Thursday to celebrate their passage to high school. Principal Steve Harris reminded students that this is one step on their educational ladder to achieve a good job and live the life of their dreams.

Teachers retire

Kay Nuckols and Charles Higdon celebrated their retirement on Tuesday in the junior high library. Nuckols’ enthusiasm for teaching will be reflected in her plans for the future in ranching and writing. Higdon expressed gratitude to the students, parents, and staff for their cooperation and help the past 13 years with the Portales band program.

Summer school

Portales Municipal Schools and GEAR UP combine forces to offer summer school for students wanting a last chance to pass to the next grade. Summer school is also offered for students who scored low on their CEC tests. Taking summer school will allow students to take an elective next year rather than taking a remedial reading or math class. Classes are held from 8 a.m. to noon June 9 to July 3. For information, call Melvin Nusser at 356-5831 or pick up an application at the junior high office.

Summer vacation

Principal Steve Harris and Assistant Principal Alta Elder extend their best wishes for all students and their families to have a safe and restful summer vacation.

Billie Dixon can be reached at 356-8578.
