Choirs fare well in Southeast Disrict

Clovis school choirs captured their share of top honors in the Southeast District Vocal Festival held in Clovis at Marshall Auditorium on April 9-10.

Choirs from throughout southeastern New Mexico competed in concert and sightreading.

Three adjudicators evaluated the concert area and one judged sightreading.

Choirs earning superior ratings in either concert or sightreading received a small plaque, and choirs earning superior ratings in both concert and sightreading received a large “Sweepstakes” plaque.

“It was a fantastic showing for the Clovis choirs,” said Wayne Anderson, music coordinator for Clovis schools. “I’m very proud of our directors and their students who have worked so diligently to achieve these results. Clovis continues to the lead the district and state in choral and band activities.”

In the High School Division, Clovis claimed four of the 11 “Sweepstakes” awards.

The Clovis High School Women’s Second Choir, Men’s Choir, Chorale Women’s Choir, and Chorale received superior ratings in concert and sightreading to earn four “Sweepstakes” awards.

The Concert Choir received a superior rating in concert. The Clovis High School choirs are directed by Chuck Tipton.

In the Junior High Division, Clovis claimed eight of the 12 “Sweepstakes” awards.

The Yucca Seventh-Grade Choir, Treble Choir, Men’s Choir, Advanced Treble Choir, and Chorale, directed by Virginia Morrison, all received superior ratings in concert and sightreading to earn five “Sweepstakes” awards.

The Marshall Seventh-Grade Choir, Men’s Choir, and Chorale received superior ratings in concert and the Marshall Treble Choir received superior ratings in concert and sightreading to earn a “Sweepstakes” award. The Marshall choirs are directed by Jan McFarling.

The Gattis Seventh-Grade Choir and Chorale, directed by Karolyn Sailer, received superior ratings in concert and sightreading to earn two “Sweepstakes” awards.

The Ranchvale Elementary Choir, directed by Brian Uerling, received a superior rating in concert. Elementary school choirs sightread for “comment only,” and are not rated in sightreading.
