Joseph Brown, 74

Joseph William “Jake” Brown, 74, of Jal, died Monday, May 5, 2003, at Midland Memorial Hospital in Midland, Texas.

He was born on Dec. 1, 1928, in Cogar, Okla., to Myrtie and John Brown.

He was a 1947 graduate of Floyd High School. He married Coralie Nell Mullins on Feb. 5, 1953, in Roswell. He coached and taught math and history in Floyd, Farmington, Belen, LaJoya and Melrose and was a houseparent for New Mexico Boys Ranch. In 1971 he moved to Jal, where he coached the girls’ basketball and track programs and taught until his retirement in 1986.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and a sister, Oleta Pace.

He is survived by his wife; three sons, Alvin Brown of Durango, Colo., Scott Brown of Andrews, Texas, and Greg Brown of Hobbs; two brothers, Elton Brown and Dale Brown, both of Portales; three sisters, Mary Etta Greenlees and Norma Morgan, both of San Diego, and Gayle Greene of Albuquerque; and two grandchildren.

Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday at Emmanuel Baptist Church in Portales. The Rev. Terrill Mitchell will officiate.

Burial will be at Mt. Zion Cemetery near Dora.

Pallbearers will be Mike Morgan, Billy Greenlees, Mack Brown, Wendell Brown, Rick Jackson, Roger Jackson, Ron Jackson, Mike Ackerman and Nelson Ackerman.

A memorial service will be held at 3 p.m. Monday at Jal High School Auditorium. The Rev. Floyd Haddock will officiate.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Carolyn Awbrey Scholarship Fund, care of Wells Fargo Bank in Jal.

Francis Fuller, 83

Francis Fuller, 83, of Portales, died Wednesday, May 7, 2003, at his home.

He was born on Dec. 19, 1919, in Kintyre, N.D., to Amanda and Francis M. Fuller.

He grew up on the family farm in Kintyre. He served in Europe during World War II. He was in the 8th Air Force of the Army Air Corps. He married Lea Essig on July 5, 1943, in Napoleon, N.D. He moved to Tucumcari in 1994 and then Portales in 1999. Family members said he enjoyed farming, seemed to always have animals of one kind or another, was an avid reader, and liked hunting and sports of all kind. He was a member of the Seventh-day Adventist Church.

He was preceded in death by his parents; six brothers, Albert, Orvis, George, Lynn, Robert and Clifford Fuller; a son, Curtis Ray Fuller; and a grandson, Mark Howard Fuller.

He is survived by his wife; a son, Howard Fuller of Lebanon, Mo.; two daughters, Frances L. Gunsch of Longmont, Colo., and Dorothy Nelson of Clovis; a brother, Harlan Fuller of Steele, N.D.; and eight grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.

Services will be held at 3 p.m. Friday at the Seventh-day Adventist Church in Portales. Sven Frantzen, Dennis Harper and Johnny Lindsey will officiate.

Shirell Massey, 62

Shirell Massey, 62, of Loveland, Colo., died Monday, May 5, 2003, at Hospice Care Center in Loveland.

He was born on June 27, 1940, in Portales, to Lois and Claudie Carrol Massey.

He graduated from high school in Portales. He married Carolyn A. Kerr on Sept. 5. 1992, in Loveland. He worked as a truck driver for Wal-Mart for more than 15 years and was honored for never having an accident on the job with more than 2 million miles logged. He was a member of the Fellowship Baptist Church in Portales. Family member said he loved truck driving and hunting.

He was preceded in death by a sister.

He is survived by his wife; two sons, Bobby Massey of Plainview, Texas, and Ricky Massey of Colorado; a daughter, Terri Brown of Mesa, Ariz.; a brother, Ronnie Dee Massey of Clovis; and five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday at Wheeler Mortuary Chapel. The Rev. Ted Bailey will officiate.

Burial will be at Mt. Zion Cemetery near Dora.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Fellowship Baptist Church.

Geneva Weiser, 78

Geneva Irene Weiser, 78, of Bristow, Okla., died Tuesday, May 6, 2003, at Roosevelt General Hospital.

She was born on March 29, 1925, to Dora Elizabeth and Roy Hoover.

She came to Portales to be with her sister for a birthday celebration and became ill.

She is survived by a son, Gary Henderson of Bristow; a sister, Volita Killgore of Portales; and five grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
