Mr. Porter Davis “Pat” Henry, 61, of Portales, died Monday, April 28, 2003, at his home.

He was born on May 25, 1941, in Carlsbad, to Madge and A.P. Henry.

He graduated from Carlsbad High School in 1959. He attended Eastern New Mexico University in Portales, graduating with a bachelor’s degree in 1963 and a master’s degree in 1964. He married Jane Phillips on March 22, 1964, in Clovis.

Family members said he built an exemplary music program in Carlsbad, performing at Disneyland, Denver Broncos football games, the Orange Bowl, the Hula Bowl, Jimmy Carter’s inaugural parade and the Fourth of July parade in Washington, D.C.

He was the band director at Portales High School for four years and Farwell High School for another three years. In 2003, he was inducted into the New Mexico Music Educator’s Hall of Fame and received a distinguished service award from ENMU. He participated in the Clovis Community Band and Eastern’s Symphony Orchestra.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

He is survived by his wife; two daughters, Pam Hartzog (and husband, Mickey) and Shelly Flake (and husband, Robert), all of Carrollton, Texas; four grandchildren, Kelsi and Cory Flake and Drew and Jayda Hartzog; his mother-in-law, Sheila Phillips of Clovis; a brother-in-law, Dr. William Phillips of San Antonio; and the Nymeyer family of Carlsbad.

The Rev. Harry Riser will officiate the services.
