  • Clovis makes $1.25 million land purchase

    Kevin Wilson|Updated Dec 29, 2018

CLOVIS — It took the Clovis City Commission less than 13 minutes to spend $1.25 million Thursday night, as the body handled a pair of land deals in a short special meeting. After a short introduction and explanation from Mayor David Lansford on both, commissioners immediately moved to what would be 7-0 votes. All commissioners but Fidel Madrid attended; Commissioner Sandra Taylor-Sawyer participated by phone. The first transaction was $1.25 million, plus closing costs, to Sam and Julie Snell for 633 acres of land west of t...

The Staff of The News|Updated Dec 29, 2018

Three area prep football players were selected as the state’s best, regardless of classification, as part of the All-USA New Mexico Football Team, announced by USA Today High School Sports. Players were selected based on their athletic achievements from the 2018-19 season. Clovis had a pair of first-teamers, with senior Stephen Acosta a first-team offensive lineman and senior Montez Wright a first-team defensive back. Portales junior Romeo Gbassagee was named to the second-team defense in a lineman position. Class 6A state c...

  • Eagles topple ENMU men

The Staff of The News|Updated Dec 29, 2018

EDMOND, Oklahoma — The Eastern New Mexico men’s basketball team was hoping to carry a five-game winning streak into 2019, but will instead go into the new year on a one-game losing skid. The Greyhounds lost at Oklahoma Christian 72-62 Saturday afternoon, thanks in part to a poor rebounding effort — as in, getting outboarded 47-26. Still, Eastern was down only 38-34 at halftime, but couldn’t keep the Cougars from staying in control during the second half and winning by 10. Eastern dropped to 5-5 as a result, but will at leas...

  • Year in review: Right-to-work ordinance garnered attention in 2018

    Jamie Cushman|Updated Dec 29, 2018

PORTALES — The Roosevelt County Commission considered just four ordinances in 2018, but only one really caught the attention of residents in eastern New Mexico and elsewhere in the state, leading to a pair of marathon public comment sessions. The debate surrounding the county’s right-to-work ordinance, which says county residents cannot be required to join a union or pay dues as a condition of employment, was among the top stories to come out of Roosevelt County in 2018. The notice of intent to adopt the right-to-work ord...

  • Year in review: Curry County moved forward on construction projects

    Jamie Cushman|Updated Dec 29, 2018

CLOVIS - While Seth Martin was actually appointed to the Curry County Commission at the end of December 2017, it wasn't until the new year when his presence was really felt. Martin cast the tie-breaking vote to approve two contracts totaling over $900,000 at the county's first meeting of the year, as the road barn and water line extension were among the top stories from Curry County in 2018. At the commission's first meeting of the year and thus Martin's first meeting as a com...

  • Year in review: Water central theme of Clovis' year

    Kevin Wilson|Updated Dec 29, 2018
    1

CLOVIS - As the first days of January flowed into the closing days of December, it wasn't hard to notice water as a constant concern when it came to the city of Clovis. In its first meeting of the year, the Clovis City Commission approved an agreement to work with Southwest Cheese on a project to accept wastewater, thus limiting the potable water needed for municipal uses. The final time the body met, it made a land purchase. While the largest intent was to work with an...

  • Lawsuit filed against former deputy chief public defender

The Staff of The News|Updated Dec 29, 2018

SANTA FE — A lawsuit filed in the First Judicial District alleges a former deputy chief public defender in Clovis created a hostile and hypersexualized work atmosphere and targeted employees who reported the misconduct. Chandler Blair, who resigned in July to enter into private practice in Albuquerque, is accused of misusing his position as second in command for the state’s public defender department in a lawsuit filed by former Clovis Division Managing Attorney Jocelyn Garrison. Blair, who has previously denied sexual harass...

  • Man hospitalized in Christmas morning shooting

    Kevin Wilson|Updated Dec 29, 2018

CLOVIS — Jazmine Williams described her older brother James Andre Williams as a friendly guy without many close friends, likely to spend nights at his house tinkering around in the kitchen and the repair shop. That made Christmas morning quite the surprise, when family was shocked to learn he suffered a gunshot to the head in an incident where details still weren’t clear a few days later. Williams, 46, remains at the intensive care unit at University Medical Center in Lubbock. His sister said it’s possible he’ll be moved to a...

  • Another viewpoint: Thanks to residents, time won't forget former POW camp

    John Dilmore|Updated Dec 29, 2018

History can be easily lost. It happens all the time, for all sorts of reasons. Nature overtakes a structure that decades or centuries ago served as the center of a community; time and the elements wear away at the clues past generations left to their existence; progress rolls over, or builds over, connections to the past before anyone realizes what’s being lost. Good fortune in the form of advantageous geography sometimes prevents demolition or degradation of historic sites. Surprising feats of engineering often defy the best...

  • Trump should chill on stock market

    Rich Lowry|Updated Dec 29, 2018

Donald Trump may watch the stock market more closely than any day trader. For a president who underlined the increasing importance of working-class whites to the GOP coalition and who trampled so much bipartisan economic orthodoxy during the campaign, to be so overtly obsessed with the stock market is a strange disconnect. In fact, no president in memory has so publicly staked himself to the market. Trump has, in contrast, paid relatively little public attention to wage...

  • A few extra Santa letters, just in case

    Kevin Wilson|Updated Dec 29, 2018

I’ve never understood how the letters to Santa thing works. Is one stamp enough to get a letter to the North Pole? It’s not part of the United States, after all. And what about those letters that don’t have stamps? Does magic get them there? Does Santa read the letters and then send them to the newspaper, or does the U.S. Postal Service cut out the middle man and take them straight to the newspaper? Regardless, I got a stack of these letters on Dec. 26. I submit some of these letters, hoping they had a Merry Christmas just...

  • Year to bring change driven by readers

    David Stevens|Updated Dec 29, 2018

The new year will bring a few more changes to The Eastern New Mexico News. But this time, those changes won’t involve cost cutting as they have so often in recent years. This time, the change will be driven by readers. Starting Wednesday, we will introduce a Readers Choice page. We’ve been asking readers — through our Facebook page and face-to-face encounters — what they’d like to see that the paper doesn’t publish now. A few of the responses: • More reader interaction ...

  • Racing commission takes no action on license

    Jamie Cushman|Updated Dec 29, 2018

ALBUQUERQUE — The New Mexico Racing Commission held a special meeting on Friday to discuss the state’s potential sixth racetrack license, but did not move any closer to actually issuing that license. “At this point in time, we’re basically in the same spot as we were previously,” said Izzy Trejo, the commission’s executive director. Friday’s meeting lasted about an hour and 45 minutes; almost all of it in closed session. None of the five groups vying to bring a racetrack to Clovis, Tucumcari or Lordsburg were awarded the l...

  • Got my social networking done at Salvation Army kettle

    Karl Terry|Updated Dec 29, 2018

I logged into my social network a couple of times last week. No, I wasn’t lurking around on Facebook. I was ringing the bell for Salvation Army’s Red Kettle campaign on behalf of Rotary. I’m pretty sure I got more social networking done in two one-hour sessions in front of Wal-Mart than most people accomplish in a year on social media or on their smart phone. My wife gets frustrated with me when I go to Wal-Mart anyway. Seems it takes too long because she thinks I talk to ever...
