For our viewers, the guy found the only local theater that planned to show the comedy on Christmas Day, bought up all the tickets and then had no buyers when Sony released the movie online for $6. “Well, Kevin...

  • Pages past — Dec. 31

On this date … 1974: A corporation made up of four Poynor brothers had assumed ownership of the White’s store at 421 Main in Clovis. The Poynors already operated White’s stores in Portales, Muleshoe, Friona, Hereford and Littlefield. Marlin Poynor said the Clovis store was “a mess … but we plan to do considerable rearranging in the near future and we also plan to give more personalized service in the Clovis store.” 1954: The Clovis Fire Department reported a mostly “uneventful year.” Three businesses sustained extensive damag...

  • A look back at community columnists

    Sharna Johnson

Editor’s note: This is one in a series of columns looking back at regional news in 2014. It will continue through Jan. 1. When there’s no news, when the news is boring, when the news is all bad, I think our newspapers are still worth at least 75 cents every day. That’s because of our community columnists. Here are a few of the more interesting things our community columnists had to say in 2014: Betty Williamson: One Halloween, when my brothers and I were but sprouts, someo... Full story

  • Christmas is the season of hope

    Curtis Shelburne

"The Season of Hope." Those are the words emblazoned across the gift bag I just puttered past in our bedroom. And so it is, this great season of Christmas. A season when hope takes center stage. And, sorry if this is picky, I really do think the season is a good deal more hope-full when we realize that it's a season, not just a day that ends on the last gasp of December 25 and vanishes once the wrapping paper hits the floor. (Google it. Many centuries of history are on my...

  • Year in review: New leaders, controversy mark county's year

Projects Editor [email protected] New leaders elected, a controversial infusion of cash to expand the jail, a strip club and a controversial takeover of the clerk’s office marked 2014 for Curry County. “It probably won’t go over too well,” Commission Chairman Frank Blackburn acknowledged when asked about public reaction to an increase in gross receipts taxes approved in August. Proceeds from the .25 percent tax increase are earmarked to pay off a $14 million bond sale completed earlier this month. Several residen...

  • Police respond to 32 criminal damage reports

link Courtesy photo: Erica Nichole Jones Staff report The Monday evening vandalism of 32 cars throughout Clovis is a stone-cold whodunit. • Good time to look back, forward

State columnist link Tom McDonald It’s all a matter of perspective. The year 2014 might have been a great one for you. Or it could have been hell. I hope for your sake it was the former, but either way it’s a good time to look back — and forward. Politically, it was a rough year for the Democrats, both here in New Mexico and in the halls of Congress. Gary King got trounced in November, but we all pretty much knew that was going to happen. It must have been a tough, tough year...

  • Immigration mixed message lost in translation

The Obama administration’s tough public message that young illegal border-crossers would be detained, then sent home, apparently was lost in translation. Or it was just a PR stunt to begin with. Of the detainees — mostly unaccompanied teens, and Central American mothers and young children — who were housed at a temporary immigration center in Artesia that just closed, 69 percent have been released to appear later at immigration hearings and in some cases to pursue claims of political asylum. At the inauguration of Homel...
