  • Local charities use gifts efficiently

    J Michael Slinker Guest columnist

One day remains to make a charitable gift that benefits others, make you feel good for your actions, and allows you to take a tax deduction for 2012. A new tax year starts Tuesday. When you make a gift, give with confidence to Curry and Roosevelt charities that have been designated by the Internal Revenue Service as 501(c)(3) nonprofit organizations. If you are unsure about the charitable status of a group, ask to see their letter from the IRS or search directly online using IRS Publication 78. Nearly all schools, churches,...

  • Editorial: Real ID Act step down slippery slope

    Clovis Media Inc

You wait in line, oftentimes for hours, at the New Mexico Department of Motor Vehicles office to obtain a driver's license. After all, it's the state's exclusive business to ensure that you meet the requirements set down to qualify for a license, right? Not so fast, according to an intrusive federal law called the Real ID Act. Implementation of the Real ID Act for New Mexicans has again been delayed indefinitely but should be rejected permanently. Besides, under the Constitution's 10th Amendment, only a state can determine...

  • Their view: Senate should pass House proposal to avoid fiscal cliff

Americans for Limited Government President Bill Wilson issued the following statement urging the Senate to act on legislation that would avert the fiscal cliff of tax increases on every American: "Although the Senate has passed legislation that would affect tax rates at the start of the new year, the bill itself is unconstitutional, as S. 3412 never originated in the House of Representatives. Article 1, Section 7 of the Constitution requires that 'All bills for raising revenue shall originate in the House of...

  • Year in Review - Police faced setbacks

    Eric Butler CMI Correspondent

Editor's note: This is one of a series on top stories in the PNT coverage area in 2012. To say that 2012 was a bit of a rough year for the Portales Police Department would be a major understatement. By the time fall turned to winter, the Portales PD had a new chief but had also suffered several minor bruises to the department's reputation and a couple of major blows. In February, former Portales police captain Lonnie Berry was sentenced to 18 months probation and a $500 fine for tampering with public records — largely due to...

  • Year in Review - Prayer divided city

    Eric Butler CMI Correspondent

Editor's note: This is one of a series on top stories in the PNT coverage area in 2012. In mid-September, Portales' city leagues Sports Director Mike Doerr told the Portales News Tribune that coach-led prayer would no longer be allowed at games under the city's auspices. He added that, "There's nothing up for discussion." Doerr may have been right in that the decision ultimately wasn't altered, but there was certainly plenty of discussion in the weeks afterward. "If they don't want to be a part of it, they don't have to be a...

  • My Turn - Resolve must be strong in 2013

This year I am determined to keep all 10 New Year's resolutions. Last year I only kept three: Not bad for a batting average, but not stellar when the ones kept were exercising five more minutes per week, saving $5 more per month and eating five fewer vegan meals per year. My problem was setting my sights too high. For example, I made such impossible resolutions as not mixing whites and colors on hot, remembering to return people's calls, and becoming a better person. This year all 10 are more realistic. I resolve to: - Not...

  • Technology has pampered our progress

Grandpa Tommy was reminiscing, "It's a shame everybody couldn't go through the Great Depression. I know what he meant. I think. He didn't mean it like "It's a shame everybody hadn't been in a concentration camp or had polio." He was remarking that most of us Baby Boomers and younger are unable to appreciate how technology has pampered us. There was no safety net back then. Grandpa Tommy spent the Dirty 30's in the depths of the Dust Bowl in Syracuse, Kan. Then the first half of the 40's he was on a Navy vessel in the...

  • Holidays can bring out best, worst in people

    Clyde Davis CMI columnist

T he season between Thanksgiving and Epiphany, which roughly defines the holiday season, seems to bring out both the best and the worst. Needless to say, I'm not writing of the shopping mall in Oregon or the Newtown school shootings; those are too horrific and macabre to fit into any pattern of sanity. What I refer to are acts which fit into the spectrum of normalcy, yet seem to reflect both the highest and the lowest in human behavior. On the lower end of the spectrum are people who do, as someone actually did to us, and...

  • 'Smart' devices mystifying

    Karl Terry CMI columnist

This will no doubt go down in family history as the "Get Smart" Christmas. No, it had nothing to do with Don Adams as Agent 86 Maxwell Smart. Though it did have a little in common with his clever shoe phone. My wife and I got smart phones and my mom got a smart TV this year for Christmas. I think the gauge of how smart these devices really are lies in just how dumb they made me feel. My mother and my 78-year-old aunt both had smart phones before I did, so naturally at that point it didn't matter whether or not it was practica...

  • Hounds, Zias return from holiday break

    Dave Wagner CMI sports writer

Andrew Helton would certainly like to have a better record than 5-6 at this point in the season, but he says it's all relative. "We're better than our team was a year ago, and we were 9-4 (at this point)," the fourth-year Eastern New Mexico University men's basketball coach said. "It's a function of our schedule — we haven't played a bad team yet." The Greyhounds resume their slate after a holiday break with a 4 p.m. Lone Star Conference clash against Midwestern State (7-3, 3-0 LSC) on Monday at Greyhound Arena. Women's t...
