  • Northern neighbors

    Eric Butler

Following the first game of the Plateau Wireless Classic in Clovis, members of both teams gathered for a single group photo. It was an act reminiscent of competitions where squads come from far-off foreign lands and, after making the voyage, even the hosts want a souvenir of their trip. As far as the Lathrop Malemutes are concerned, that isn’t all that far from the truth. Yes, Alaska is part of the United States, but Fairbanks is a long, long way from Clovis. As the crow flies, the two comparable-sized cities are 2,793 m...

  • Aristotle and Peter Parker

Names: Aristotle and Peter Parker, hermit crabs Story: Originally, there were Aristotle and Socrates. They were both small hermit crabs. Well, when hermit crabs need to grow, they bury themselves and molt. While molting, according to everything I've read, the old skin smells really good. (The crab is supposed to eat it after the molt because it contains tons of vitamins, Gross, Huh?) Well, Aristotle obviously thought that Socrates smelled pretty good, because he dug her up (in the middle of her molt) and ate her. So I went...

  • Max

Name: Max About: Max is ten pounds of ferociousness, that is if you count barking at a trash can and the vaccuum as being ferocious. He loves snuggling up to people, licking them and ripping the legs off of all of his stuffed animals. He doesn't enjoy wearing clothes or his cowboy boots that I bought him last year. Owner name: Dianna Hernandez...

  • New life should always be treasured

I had two miscarriages after my first daughter was born. Although they were early in the pregnancy, I felt a deep sense of loss and despair for the babies I lost, and it took me a long time to recover and move forward. I hated having to tell everyone that the baby didn't make it. I dreaded the uncomfortable silence and awkward conversation when I saw a friend or bumped into a random acquaintance at the supermarket. After our losses, my husband and I decided we would wait until the second trimester to share any future pregnanc...

  • New Year’s predictions ready to roll

It’s time for my favorite annual New Year’s tradition. No, it’s not watching a giant ball drop in Times Square, toasting my friends with champagne, kissing my sweetie at midnight, watching college bowl games until my brain rots or feasting on black-eyed peas. It’s time for me to make my annual predictions for the coming year. If you read closely these tidbits might reveal a little bit about the year past or even stuff that’s still on our plate like that slice of chewy fruit cake. These prognostications are made in fun and s...

  • Bhutto assassination will have far-reaching effects in politics

The assassination of former Pakistani Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto, who recently returned to an active role in Pakistani politics, is a setback for any hope of democratic reform there. Even more alarming, it is a significant victory for the forces of Islamic extremism — the Taliban, al-Qaida, Osama bin Laden and supporters and sympathizers everywhere — in a country with a nuclear arsenal. That said, few observers have discussed the impact of the assassination on U.S. interests in the region or how skillfully the United Sta... Full story
