  • Euphemisms don't change ethics

    Kent McManigal Local columnist

Following libertarian principles is inseparable from being a decent human being. Even kindergartners are taught the libertarian principles: Don't start a fight by throwing the first punch and don't take other people's stuff. It really is that simple. It's only as kids get older that most adults start trying to make children accept exceptions to these rules. It is a glaring inconsistency that most children can see right through, while their parents try to wiggle around finding justifications that just aren't there. Rules are o...

  • Fiscal cliff no-win situation for Republicans Fiscal cliff no-win situation

MONA CHAREN compared Santa Claus to Democrats and Republicans to God in a recent column. Here's a snippet: Who wants a fantastic job? Unemployment is high, so there ought to be many candidates. The job is leader of the Republican Party. As leader, you will be the spokesman for a philosophy of smaller government, more individual liberty, fiscal responsibility, free markets and budget cuts. You will speak up for the traditional family and strong community organizations. On one hand, you stand for keeping taxes low on the very...

ROSWELL — Style points weren't in abundance, but the Portales Lady Rams did enough right to advance to Friday's finals of the Roswell Goddard Holiday Classic. Freshman Kambrey Blakey scored six of her team-high 13 points in a decisive 12-4 domination of the third quarter and the Lady Rams went on to a 34-27 victory over the host Lady Rockets on Thursday afternoon. PHS (9-3) takes on Roswell High in today's 3 p.m. championship game. The Lady Rams erased a 14-11 halftime deficit to take control. Coach Clay Stout said his s...

  • Crews work together to fix storm-whitened winter roads

    Steve Hansen CMI staff writer

Before most drivers take a deep breath and steer their vehicles onto storm-whitened winter roads for the morning commute, a small army of public employees have been there first, usually, to make the roads as passable as possible. These are the state, county and city road crews who rush into the storm to spread salt, sand and cinders or plow snow off the roadways as soon as they know things are getting rough. The largest share of that work belongs to the crews of New Mexico Department of Transportation's District 2. The...

  • My Turn - No fun like game night

    Alisa Boswell

It may be sad or it may be just funny that as an adult person, the highlight of my week was playing Hungry Hungry Hippos and doing word search puzzles with a 6-year-old. The one day I had off this week for the holidays was a good one, because it included making some great shopping finds in Muleshoe (Yes, I said Muleshoe), playing great games with an enthusiastic and intelligent child, and celebrating a late Christmas in which I enjoyed the entertainment of watching adults and teenagers try to defeat an electronic game in... Full story

  • Homeowners insurance rates need curbing

If the Texas Legislature needed more motivation to finally act on excessively high homeowners insurance rates, it came this month. The National Association of Insurance Commissioners reported the Lone Star State has the highest average annual cost for this vital consumer protection. The average for the most commonly sold policy in Texas in 2010 was a whopping $1,560, well above the national average of $909 and 3.2 percent higher than the state's average in the previous year. Texans are not naive, and they do not want a free... Full story

  • The world is waiting for you

    Joan Clayton Religion columnist

We have a brand New Year before us. 2013 comes just waiting to be lived. Living it with hope and promise makes it all the more exciting. Let me encourage you to "happen to life" this year. Refuse to let "life happen to you." Maybe last year was painful with hard places. I am reminded of how a tiny grain of sand in the soft body of an oyster can be a constant source of irritation for it, but over time the oyster makes that painful irritation into a beautiful pearl of great value. With God's help, we can turn painful irritating...

  • Year in Review - Siblings' deaths rocked town

    Eric Butler CMI correspondent

Editor's note: This is the second of a five-part series on the top stories in the PNT coverage area in 2012. The death of the Anthony brothers of Elida is No. 4 on the PNT's list. It didn't even happen in Roosevelt County, but when one truck was hit by a larger truck in Chaves County the tragic consequences instantly stretched north. Fred Anthony sits in a 1926 school bus that he rebuilt from scratch. His family said the school bus was one of his great joys. Around 3:45 p.m. Aug. 9, brothers Fred, 72, and Ronald Anthony, 76,... Full story
