  • Here's hoping Dakota's story will open some eyes

    David Stevens|Updated Dec 29, 2016

CLOVIS — When Dakota Revell started at Bella Vista Elementary School in 2007, she announced she might just skip kindergarten and go on to first grade. And that's exactly what happened after school officials got to know her. "They said she was really, really smart and we moved her on to first grade," said her mother, Veronica Revell. "She's always been ambitious and if she's wanted to do something, she will do it." Dakota's a sophomore at Clovis High School today. At 14, s...

  • Fire strikes near Hull Street overpass

The Staff of The News|Updated Dec 29, 2016

CLOVIS — Christmas smelled a lot like smoke for most of Clovis on Sunday as a grass fire destroyed about 100 acres near the Hull Street overpass on the city’s west edge. Clovis Fire Department Battalion Chief Joel Gershon said a shed, multiple porta-potties, hay, grass and rubbish were consumed by the fire, which was extinguished after about three hours. No injuries were reported. Gershon said high winds complicated firefighting efforts, with gusts near 50 mph. A cause was...

  • Remembering Goliath

The Staff of The News|Updated Dec 25, 2016

It was the seventh named storm of the 2015-16 season, but you'd be hard-pressed to find anybody who called Winter Storm Goliath lucky. The best thing an eastern New Mexico resident could say about it? The storm that hit the day after Christmas could have been worse for the area. Goliath, which stretched from New Mexico to Georgia and went as far north as Michigan, had twisters, floods and snowfalls of about a foot in Clovis and Portales and more than twice as much elsewhere in...

  • Goliath: Claimed 10 percent of the dairy cow herd at Nature's Way

    Alisa Boswell|Updated Dec 25, 2016

PORTALES — When Nature's Way Dairy northeast of Portales lost 10 percent of its herd last December, it took six months to rebuild the numbers, said General Manager Jamie Kulesa. Kulesa said his dairy lost more than 300 cows, with 88 dying in the storm and 232 having to be sold to be butchered, because their teets had frozen, which was the case with many of the cows lost locally, according to Kulesa. "I think initially I was dealing with the logistics of getting back to normal. It was mainly taking care of cows and people. E...

  • No matching pajamas this year

    Dnieka Hartsfield|Updated Dec 25, 2016

This morning is not your typical Sunday morning. It’s Christmas morning and today is one of your most favorite days of the year. The last time Christmas landed on Sunday was in 2011 and before that in 2005. Your typical Sunday morning routine starts with reading the newspaper with a cup of coffee, then church and later football. If you’ve managed to read your paper first thing this task-filled morning, you're off to a great start because I have some comfy outfit sug...

  • Our People: 'Military brat' calls Clovis home

    Updated Dec 25, 2016

Angela Ogletree calls herself a military brat and says she has lived in many places. She spent her school years in Clovis and graduated from Clovis High School in 2000. She was a Wildcadette and loved to dance and cheer. She moved away from Clovis for a while but eventually moved back to the place she calls home. Her father, Bob D'Spain, is retired from the Air Force. She has one younger brother, Kyle D'Spain. She is the Gattis Middle School cheer coach to who she calls an "amazing group of young ladies." Ogletree is the...

  • Terry: Belief in Santa gives faith in things unseen

    Karl Terry|Updated Dec 25, 2016

I still believe in Santa Claus. How about you? I even have a red and green baseball cap with a stocking crown proclaiming the fact somewhere. As kids we heard the story of the birth of Jesus in a manger and we were also told the story of Santa Claus. Both took a lot of imagination to embrace as a child. The iconic Clement Clarke Moore Santa Claus was alive and real in my childhood home. My mother worked hard to make sure her kids believed in Santa. It was a big deal. She...

  • Empty Stocking Fund falls short of goal

The Staff of The News|Updated Dec 25, 2016

CLOVIS — The Christmas season comes to a close, but with it comes the knowledge of helping families in need. Salvation Army Corps Officer Lt. Kelly Berggren said as of Thursday that $2,000 was raised by the organization through the Empty Stocking Fund. “People in Clovis always come through late, so I’m assuming more will be added to that,” said Berggren. The amount raised comes up short of the $7,500 goal Berggren set at the start of the fund, he said, but it still makes an impact. “I’m assuming we’re not gonna reach that bu...

  • Remember the precious things

    Alisa Boswell|Updated Dec 25, 2016

PORTALES — I recently read a coworker's column in which he talked about having a hard time getting into the Christmas spirit this year. I could relate. I was also delayed in finding the spirit this year, and I couldn't grasp exactly why that was the case. I normally love Christmas. I love the twinkle lights, the stockings, the classic movies, like "It's a Wonderful Life" and "White Christmas," but more than anything, I love the way this time of year changes people — how the...

  • Don't forget to dream at Christmas

    David Stevens|Updated Dec 25, 2016

In December 1913, James Sadler was 7 years old. He wrote a letter to Santa Claus, which his school teacher declared one of the best in the class; even good enough, she said, for publication in the Clovis Journal. “Dear Santa Clclaus,” it began, “will you bring me a little bee! bee! gun and a cow boy suit and candy and som oranges and som apples and nuts that’s all P:S. I want a big automobile. Good by dear Santa claus.” He signed it, “Your friend James Sadler.” Sadler made t...

    David Norton|Updated Dec 25, 2016

PORTALES — With one successful season in the books for Eastern New Mexico University and Portales in their new on-campus Greyhound Stadium, the stadium at Blackwater Draw has now gone a full football season with no games played. Whether one looks at tailgating, record attendance, big wins by the Greyhounds or a state championship by the Rams, the new stadium located in Portales has been a success after its inaugural season. While no one is begging to head back the 'the D...

  • Coach Roanhaus, warts and all, will be missed

The Eastern New Mexico News|Updated Dec 25, 2016

Three things we will always remember about Eric Roanhaus: • The success of his Clovis High School football teams; • His, um, political incorrectness; • The loyalty that went both ways with his players. Roanhaus, 69, announced his “resignation” on Wednesday. He said he is not retiring because “retirement is for old people” and he may want to coach again in a year or so. Whether he’s finished or not, his legacy is secure. Roanhaus spent 39 seasons as Clovis’ head football coach, won more games — 343 — than any other high school...

  • Goliath: Storm stories

The Staff of The News|Updated Dec 25, 2016

Retired Game Warden Wes Robertson of Clovis said he didn’t lose anything during the storm — he gained something. “We have a cat door from outside into our garage,” he wrote in response to a Facebook question. “A little black and white feral kitten took up shelter in the garage. “We would just get a flash of seeing it. We put out a box with a blanket in it, food and water. (It) took about a month to get her — yes, “her” and very pregnant — to let us touch her. “She had four kittens. We kept two. So ... Goliath gave us three ca...

Dr. J Tim Rainey will talk about biomimetic dentistry and the importance of maintaining the correct pH balance in our mouths. • Goliath: Spurred outreach

    Kurt Munz-Raper|Updated Dec 25, 2016

Snow storm Goliath was the precise opportunity for Living Word Church of God music minister and Celebrate Recovery facilitator Bonetta Hutson to exercise outreach — making sure her fellow members were safe during the storm. Hutson said she spent time at Pastor David Stevens' home with his family. "I didn't want to be stranded in an apartment, and at least I would be with friends," said Hutson. "That's the big advantage of having a close-knit church. As we watched it get h...

    Eamon Scarbrough|Updated Dec 25, 2016

PORTALES — High School freshmen in Portales will soon be able to take part in an event intended to teach financial responsibility, but they won't be the only ones who stand to benefit. "Reality Check Day," an event organized by United Way of Eastern New Mexico, will be coming to PHS Jan. 13 and Feb. 10, with each day featuring a morning and afternoon session, according to UWENM Director Erinn Burch. "Reality Check Day is a chance for us to create a day of simulation for the n...

  • Wildcats prep for holiday action

    Dave Wagner|Updated Dec 25, 2016

Clovis High’s basketball coaches are hoping a bit of down time will help their teams get back on the right track. The Wildcats are preparing for the Griego Holiday Classic while the girls host the Plateau Holiday Classic. Both events are scheduled for Wednesday through Friday at Rock Staubus Gym. After struggling for the most part through the 2015-16 campaign, both CHS squads got off to reasonably good starts this season. The Cats won four of their first seven, but have dropped their last two, while the Lady Cats were 4-2 a...

  • Rural home had Christmas magic

    Wendel Sloan|Updated Dec 24, 2016

Rekindling a childhood tradition, I recently searched the High Plains countryside for a Christmas tree. Any kind of trees were rare, and when I finally spotted evergreens, they were under tents in parking lots. So, I will be content with memories of east Texas. Risking frostbite, angry bulls and hunters’ stray bullets — or intentional ones from property owners — I would ride in our pickup with my father or three older brothers to pick the perfect tree from millions of east...

  • Goliath: Storm taught planning lesson

    Kurt Munz-Raper|Updated Dec 24, 2016

Clovis resident Edwina Gutierrez learned the value of planning ahead during Goliath. It was just on the bridge of Cannon Air Force Base where Gutierrez found herself stuck. The storm was so severe it sealed her car doors shut. “I was basically calling 911 and my parents right in the middle of the storm,” Gutierrez said. “The MP had to come out and got me out through my window.” It was a mistake of underestimating the force of the storm, said Gutierrez, who was working on base at the time. Gutierrez said gate workers on base t...
