  • May Christmas open our eyes to real gold

    Curtis Shelburne|Updated Dec 21, 2017

It’s always good, but never better than during these holy days, to recognize the difference between genuine gold and the sort that blinds fools (and all of us when we’re foolish). You probably remember that alchemy of old was the attempt to turn common metal into precious gold. Most blacksmiths, I suppose, were content enough to ply their useful trade and hone their craft, and their communities daily reaped the benefit of their art in iron. Alchemists ultimately benefit no one...

  • We have gifts we can give Christ this Christmas

    Judy Brandon|Updated Dec 21, 2017

This week I have been contemplating on the Christmas story and especially the three wise men and their offerings of gold, frankincense and myrrh to the Christ child in Bethlehem. Most artists’ depictions of the three wise men show them dressed in well-designed robes with ornate caps or crowns on their heads. Each man has a jeweled box or an exquisite small trunk or an elegant glass jar. These containers, one in each man’s hand, carried gold, frankincense or myrrh. When the...

  • Herding bulls a different animal

    Audra Brown|Updated Dec 21, 2017

There’s a saying about herding goats, and I’ll wager it’s not unfounded given the few goats that I’ve had the opportunity to meet. Plenty of herds of livestock must be directed and handled. Cattle are the sort that I’ve punched more than any other. It varies from place to place and herd to herd, but over time you find that there are some basic principles that stay consistent across cattle-coaxing situations. One special sort of situation is the rare occasion when the herd...

  • Elida girls fend off Clayton

The Staff of The News|Updated Dec 21, 2017

ELIDA — A true test of a good team is how it plays against top competition. A better test is when it plays a team of bigger size. Thursday, the Elida girls basketball team passed both those tests, taking care of 3A Clayton by posting a 49-44 victory at Elida High School. In the process, the Lady Tigers improved to 8-2 on the season. Jumping out early often helps a team go on to win, and Thursday was no exception. Elida rolled to a 14-6 lead by the first quarter’s end, a lead that helped when Clayton tried storming back later,...

  • Clovis water assurance plan approved

    Kevin Wilson|Updated Dec 21, 2017

CLOVIS — After nearly an hour of discussion, and plenty of assurances that a plan is more a guide than a mandate, the Clovis City Commission unanimously approved a master water assurance plan nearly a year in the making. The water plan's four core recommendations are to seek funding for statewide data collection and aquifer mapping, support policies to promote water reuse, provide resources for watershed management and playa lake conservation and create an initiative that w...

  • Water authority votes to condemn land

    David Grieder|Updated Dec 21, 2017

CLOVIS — Board members of the Eastern New Mexico Water Utility Authority on Thursday unanimously condemned a section of land southwest of Clovis. The action allows officials to continue on schedule with construction and development of a phase of the Ute Water Project, board members said. The condemnation — an assertion of eminent domain rights — follows two years of attempted negotiations with the property owners of a tract of land on a Curry County subdivision, ENMWUA attorney Dave Richards said.
