  • Dawson still Swarming

    Peter Stein|Updated Dec 20, 2018

GREENSBORO, N.C. — John Dawson knows he’s a lucky guy. He’s not playing at venues like Madison Square Garden, nor in cities like Charlotte, New York or Los Angeles. ESPN doesn’t spend hours speculating on his next free-agent landing spot. At least not yet. What Dawson does already have in common with the players who do some or all of the above is that he’s a basketball player drawing a paycheck for playing basketball. Now in his second season with the NBA G League’s...

  • So begins the legend of Mr. Mess

    David Stevens|Updated Dec 18, 2018

Sometimes the best stories are those that can't be told. Such is the case with Mr. Mess. He's a (mostly) Pomeranian pup found just after dark during Thursday's wind storm. He appeared at the door of the 3 Beautiful Messes bath shop on Norris Street - kind of ironic since he was a mess. I saw him peer in through the glass door, then dart into traffic, then return. He was approachable, with an engaging grin and a sunny disposition. I checked him for a collar and found none. At...

PORTALES — A Portales man was found guilty Tuesday on various charges resulting from a 2017 undercover narcotics operation. The charges stem from an undercover operation by the Region V Drug Task Force in July of 2017. A search warrant turned up eight individually packaged b...

  • Faith: Hope runs deep in the Christmas season

    Curtis Shelburne|Updated Dec 18, 2018

Hope. One of the most beautiful of words, hope is very near the heart of this season. For me, the Christmas-singing season usually starts in earnest about the second week in December. I start listening to Christmas music sooner than that, and I’ll usually sing one or two Christmas programs earlier, but the sleigh really gets moving in that second week. And whenever I sing those songs, at the center of the music is hope. I hope I won’t mess up by forgetting the words or, wor...

  • Faith: Reason for season rediscovered

    Gordan Runyan|Updated Dec 18, 2018

The weather in Quay County has not contributed to the feeling that Christmas is upon us. To be sure, I’m not complaining about that, but here we are, regardless of how it feels. To all the readers of this humble column, may you be richly blessed as you celebrate the advent of our Lord Jesus Christ. Consider taking half an hour to re-read the Gospel narratives that tell the story. These are found in Matthew 1 and 2; Luke 1 and 2; and John 1. You can knock those out in the time it takes to sip your way through one cup of cocoa...

  • Elida dominates all-district

The Staff of The News|Updated Dec 18, 2018

Elida’s football season has been over since November 10, but the accolades came rolling in this month. The Tigers made it all the way to the state 6-Man championship game, where they lost to a tough Animas team. The 6-Man District 1 all-district awards were released last week, with Elida’s state finalist squad earning 14 overall selections — 10 first-team and four second-team. Floyd earned nine selections — six on the first team and three on the second. San Jon/Gra...
