  • Thankful for ancient shepherds and stargazers

    Curtis Shelburne|Updated Dec 17, 2019

Thank the Lord for shepherds and stargazers. While muckety-mucks in Rome were trying to figure out new and improved ways to shake even more shekels from the pockets of the subjugated populace and further filch the meager bread of the common man, the highest of kings was pretty much ignoring Rome. The true King was dispatching a troop of angelic hosts, any one of whom would be stronger than an assembly of all of Rome’s best troops, to appear before shepherds. Shepherds? Yes, s...

  • Current dream pet would be a hedgehog

    Natalie Williams|Updated Dec 17, 2019

I have wanted pets all my life. I already have two dogs and they are irreplaceable. But I really want another pet. It would be nice to have a kitten, lizard or a hedgehog. I really want a hedgehog. I know how to care for one after lots of research. My first exotic pet passion was the fancy bearded dragon lizard. I was at a reptile convention in California with my mom and this woman let me hold her lizard — and ever since, I’ve wanted one. And then I saw a video. And my new dream pet was set on my mind — a sugar glider. These...

  • Christmas is a time of mixed emotions

    Carrie Classon|Updated Dec 17, 2019

It is the tender cusp of Christmas. It is that time when emotions run close to the overfill point, when sentimentality and anger and depression and euphoria mix freely together, with not enough space between them to tell the difference from one moment to the next. I am visiting my parents — and of course this does not help. My parents are doing well (thank you for asking). They are in their 80s now, still living in their dream cabin in the woods and, although I know they are growing older, the signs are so incremental and t...

  • Plenty to remember about Gov. Mabry

    David Stevens - Staff|Updated Dec 17, 2019

On Dec. 28, 1950, the Clovis News-Journal's front page featured two noteworthy stories: the retirement of New Mexico Gov. Thomas Mabry and the death of a man who claimed he was Billy the Kid. Mabry should be remembered for many accomplishments in his 78 years on Earth. He was the state's 14th governor, serving two terms, and spent eight years as chief justice of the New Mexico Supreme Court. He also started one of Clovis' first newspapers, the Clovis Journal in 1909, a...

  • Forget gift guides and listen to your heart

    Betty Williamson|Updated Dec 17, 2019

I grew up in an era before "gift-giving guides" were a thing. Or if they were, we never heard about them. These days we are bombarded with electronic suggestions from emails, websites, and magazines offering lists like, "36 gifts for hard-to-please friends," "26 Secret Santa ideas perfect for co-workers," and "23 luxury gifts for the man who has everything." The closest we had to gift-giving guides when I was a kid in the 1960s were the Christmas catalogs issued each year by...

  • Empty hospital board position filled

    Mathew Brock - Staff|Updated Dec 17, 2019

PORTALES — With no names on the ballot, a seat on the Roosevelt General Hospital Board of Trustees was left vacant after Election Day. It was filled Tuesday with the reappointment of Paul Benoit. Benoit was reappointed to the position representing the Floyd area on the RGH board by the Roosevelt County Commission during its regular meeting Tuesday. Benoit missed the deadline to get his name on the ballot after hospital elections were rolled into the general election and dates were changed. With no candidates, the RGH board h...
