    Kevin Wilson

This is more rambling than most of my ramblings, so please forgive me. But Friday's shootings in Newtown have left me unable to keep a straight thought. I can't imagine how it is for parents, and I'm glad I only have to imagine at this point. I've heard a lot of reactions to the shootings, and some I just want to dismiss as quickly as possible, so here goes. - Trust me, we ARE blaming the shooter. We don't want to enable another one. - If we wait for the people pushing a status-quo agenda to say today's the right day to...

  • Editorial: Limiting liberty not an answer to shooting

    Clovis Media Inc

Our nation is reeling from another unfathomable shooting tragedy and is searching for ways to prevent it from happening again. "It," of course, is the Sandy Hook Elementary School massacre last Friday in Newtown, Conn. Twenty precious children, all ages 6 and 7, and six teachers were gunned down by a madman who then turned one of his weapons on himself. Not surprisingly, President Obama spoke movingly and politically Sunday night at a prayer vigil in Newtown. He said government needs to do more to make schools safer for our... Full story

  • My Turn - Christmas family time

I wouldn't have left home to come to Portales if I wasn't serious about my writing. It has been nearly a year since I've been home and I wouldn't say I'm worn down but I'm getting pretty antsy as my trip back home approaches. I've practically had tunnel vision this past week, focusing on getting my job done so I can be with my family. And since Christmas is the biggest time of year for us, I couldn't skip being with my 91-year-old grandmother or my new nephew. I traveled a lot in college, so call me crazy, but I also miss... Full story

Cole's love for crafting beer inspired his desire to bring this new venue to the area, excited to offer craft...

  • Officials split over fee

    Christina Calloway PNT senior writer

In about three months, Portales residents will be able pay their utility bills online, but the decision to attach a $2 convenience fee with that service left Portales City councilors in deadlock, twice. City councilors stuck to their guns Tuesday night at their bi-monthly city council meeting, with three voting for and three voting against a suggested $2 convenience fee for credit card users to pay their bills online. City Manager Tom Howell said offering this service to customers would cause an expense to the city's utility...

  • Letter to the editor: Massacre shows nation lost connection with Creator

U.S. "massacre events" since 1966 total 36 and nearly 350 murders — a profile of a nation that has lost its soul and its connection with its Creator! This is reflected not only in these demonic acts of carnage, but also in our media and leaders who ask the endless string of empty "Whys." "Political correctness" doesn't allow an answer based in the truth. The "massacres" are a horrific summation, but should this shock a nation indifferent to 1,000 unborn souls aborted every day and nearly 50 million since 1973? Today, human l...

    Eric Butler CMI correspondent

PROVO, Utah — When a Division II basketball team ventures into a 20,000-plus arena to take on the likes of Brigham Young, it's usually not a matter of if but when the home team will open up a comfortable margin.
