  • Our People: Keeper of Plains history

    Updated Dec 18, 2017

Jenna Domeischel (pronounced Dah-mah-shell) has been the curator of the Blackwater Draw Museum since 2015, and one of the people who helped reinvent the museum after it was moved to its new location in Lea Hall on the campus of Eastern New Mexico University in May. Domeischel grew up in Chicago, Illinois, and Long Island, New York. Her bachelor's degree from Chicago's Columbia University is in art history, but she calls herself an "accidental archaeologist" since the decision...

  • Limited access best for landscape

    Steve Hansen, Columnist|Updated Dec 18, 2017

President Donald Trump recently reduced the size of a couple of national monuments in Utah. This has the environmental community up in arms. The environmentalists apparently think that opening this land to agricultural and industrial use will destroy the land. Implicit in that argument is that hikers, campers, picnickers, photographers, movie-makers, and recreational vehicles have less impact. I tend to disagree with that assessment. That is based on my observations of northeastern New Mexico, which consists mostly of several...

  • Read and learn, space cadets

    Wendel Sloan, Columnist|Updated Dec 18, 2017

My book-of-the-month summary for December is “How the Body Works (100 Ways Parents and Kids Can Share the Miracle of the Human Body)” by Steve Parker (Reader’s Digest Books, 1994). The book is one of 50 I picked up for $10 (including a $3 donation) at this year’s Portales Public Library sale. I find the human body to be as mysterious and fascinating as any aspect of the universe. The building blocks for our bodies arrived from space — thus, we are all space cadets. Here are...

  • Poor students no excuse for schools to perform badly

    Albuquerque Journal|Updated Dec 18, 2017

The fact that New Mexico’s high school graduation rate grew by 8 percentage points from 2011 to 2016 — or double the national improvement rate — is encouraging. But our state still has the second-worst graduation rate in the nation. That’s in part because the bar keeps getting higher as schools nationwide work diligently to improve their graduation rates, too. According to new data from the U.S. Department of Education, New Mexico’s high school graduation rate hit a record high of 71 percent in 2016 — well below the national...

  • Rudolph changed Christmas forever

    Karl Terry, Columnist|Updated Dec 18, 2017

You know Dasher and Dancer and Prancer and Vixen, Comet and Cupid and Donner and Blitzen, but do you recall the most famous novelty Christmas song of all? I love novelty Christmas songs from Elmo and Patsy’s “Grandma Got Run Over By a Reindeer” to Robert Earl Keene’s “Merry Christmas From the Family.” Even Cheech and Chong’s “Santa Claus and His Old Lady” brings a tear to my eye each year. In 1949, singing cowboy Gene Autry didn’t much care for novelty Christmas songs or...

    Jamie Cushman|Updated Dec 18, 2017

CLOVIS — American Legion Post 25 and the New Mexico American Legion Riders Chapter 2 helped spread the Christmas spirit on Saturday as the legion was filled with Christmas lights, inflatable decorations and even a sleigh being pulled by motorcycles with reindeer antlers for its annual Christmas party. “This is what we work so hard for all year so that we can get to this,” American Legion Riders Secretary Janet Romero said. • Merchant for city victim of data breach

    Kevin Wilson|Updated Dec 18, 2017

CLOVIS — City officials learned this week a third-party merchant which handles its credit card payments has had a data breach since mid-November. Until further notice, the city is not accepting any credit card payments for anything you could pay for at city hall, such as quarterly trash fees or permit fees. “When you go to the store and you run a credit card,” City Manager Justin Howalt said, “it goes through a third party. It’s the same with us. Instead of keeping (the payment system) open, they thought for security purposes...

  • Suit against Curry County headed to trial

    David Grieder|Updated Dec 18, 2017

CLOVIS — A civil lawsuit against Curry County filed more than two years ago is on its way to trial at the end of April, with the plaintiff a former jail officer seeking more than $60,000 in damages. Weston Peasnall claims he was subject to “continuous harassment” by his employers at the Curry County Adult Detention Center “for his refusal to cover up” details of an incident of alleged excessive force against an inmate in the jail, says the complaint filed March 2015. Peasnall claims the county violated the Whistleblower Prote...

CLOVIS — Portales’ girls basketball team was determined not to lose two in a row. Clovis’ girls basketball team was determined to bring down the team that had sent it to a 20-point loss two weeks earlier. Only one of the teams would get what it wanted on Saturday, and it was Portales, by way of a stunning third-quarter turnaround that helped propel the Lady Rams to a 54-48 victory at Rock Staubus Gymnasium. With it, they improved to 7-1 and quickly erased the sting of their...

  • Texico boys improve to 8-0

The Staff of The News|Updated Dec 16, 2017

LAS VEGAS, N.M. — The way the Texico Wolverines are playing, a holiday break may be a bad thing. Skyler Davis and Nathan Phipps each netted 17 points, and the Wolverines moved their record to 8-0 with a 77-40 walloping of West Las Vegas Saturday night. Dalton Thatcher added 15 and Luke Phipps 13 for the Wolverines, who never trailed against their Class 4A opponents. “We jumped out and played really well the first four minutes of the game,” Texico coach Ty Thatcher said. “We got off to a 12-0 run, and that always helps w...

  • Big third quarter lifts ENMU women to win

The Staff of The News|Updated Dec 16, 2017

SAN ANTONIO, Texas — The Greyhounds used a 16-4 third quarter run to erase an eight-point deficit, and then proceeded to hang on to a one-possession lead in the closing stages to notch a 52-45 win Saturday over St. Mary’s. Trailing by eight, 26-18, to start the third quarter, Eastern (5-5) began its 16-4 run by scoring eight-straight points to tie the game at 26-all, thanks to a jumper and a layup from Daeshi McCants.
