  • In search of ponies: Every day is Christmas for pets

    Sharna Johnson CMI columnist

They have no idea, really. In fact, just a few days ago — when the dry kibble ran out and the bowls were topped off with canned food kept for just those types of emergencies — they thought it was Christmas. And when the cold winds blew and everyone charged through the door only to find their bedding washed and fluffed, they thought that was Christmas too. Come to think of it, they kind of thought it was Christmas not too long ago when that plate was left unattended at eye level. When they hop up on the bed or squeeze their co... Full story

  • McGee: Dodge Demon sparks recollection of friend

    Grant McGee CMI columnist

I saw a 1972 Dodge Demon the other day. It reminded me of an old high school friend, Mark Woolferd. Woolferd was more my buddy Catfish's friend than mine. On any given Saturday night during those high school years he and Catfish would roll up to my house in Woolferd's shiny, black Demon with its glossy silver mag wheels, jacked-up rear-end and racing slicks. Then we'd drive off looking for girls in cars to talk to. I had my very first big-time crush during those days; on Rhonda Sue, the preacher's daughter. "McGee has a...

ALBUQUERQUE — The Clovis Wildcats turned out to be just a little more resilient than Manzano Friday night, claiming a 53-51 overtime victory in a back-and-forth affair. • Website offers Christmas perspective

    Clyde Davis CMI columnist

For those of you seeking a really radical approach to the Christmas holiday season this year, you might want to check out " The Advent Conspiracy." No, this is not an expose' of some plot by the Church to freeze life for four weeks while we await the celebration of the Lord's birth. Nor is it a conspiracy theory reframing the events of the first Advent (meaning: awaiting) as if there were some plot hatched by shepherds and carpenters in first century Judea. "Worship fully. Spend less. Give more. Love all." So goes one of the...

"My Father's House" is the story of my life written as a family history and with the hope that it would aid those with similar experiences in their lives. I have good memories of Clovis, but our family experienced some difficult times there. Upon leaving home I strayed from my parents' teachings. From the bright lights of Las Vegas to the Aurora Borealis in Alaska, I...

  • No trust in Mayan prophets

    Karl Terry CMI columnist

Is the end near? Anyone know a Mayan philosopher we can ask? I don't know but pretty sure the world will probably continue after next Friday. Just in case I'm going to see if my wife will let me open my Christmas presents early. I don't think I could take the eternal suspense of never knowing what's in that box with the red wrapping paper. I think we're all going to be OK though because the calendar we use today apparently continues past Dec. 21. I've had four sales type people drop off 2013 calendars in the last two weeks. I...

  • Balanced Rams gain first win

    Dave Wagner CMI staff writer

Nathan Chavez didn't appear to be "on" with his early shots off the bench Friday night. That changed in a hurry, though. After missing a couple of 3-pointers, the junior forward went off for 14 points in the final 4 1/2 minutes of the half to help Portales High's boys pull away from Friona 78-47 at the Ram Athletic Center. The win was the first in three games for new Rams coach Rickie McBroom. Portales put four players in double figures, had two more with nine points and...

  • Connecticut shooting resonates in area

Robin Fornoff CMI content managing editor

Yvette Nora's hug for her son and second-grader Robert was a little longer, a little bit stronger in a scene repeated dozens of times Friday outside Barry Elementary School. Like many parents across eastern New Mexico, a shooting spree leaving 20 children dead at a faraway Connecticut school made the unimaginable all too real for Nora. "Heartbreaking," Nora said of the days events. "I had to turn the TV off after a while. I just couldn't watch any more. What kind of person... Full story
