  • Real whiskers not at itchy

    Karl Terry CMI columnist

Several random observations recently have tickled my funny bone (starting with the struggle whether to spell funny bone, funnybone, funny-bone or funniebone). Here they are in random order. A television station I used to watch always announced the lotto numbers by saying "And now here's tonight's lotto numbers in random order." If they weren't random wouldn't that be a pretty rigged lotto? On the phone the other day I got tapped into a phone system that supplied news or maybe it was trivia for me while on hold. That wasn't...

  • Hit up local shops to fill gift list

    Clyde Davis CMI columnist

The gift that keeps on giving ... every gift begins with Kaye's ... the store for all your holiday needs....the slogans just keep on hitting us at this time of year, don't they? Sure, I've altered some of the words used, but you get the idea. For the good news in this week's column, we want to focus on the truth behind your gift giving. Why do you give, and how do you select the appropriate gift? Small business Saturday may have been a good place to start. Though the day itself is past, the businesses which are featured...

  • My Turn - Bin Laden should have kept low profile

During this year's Portales Public Library sale, I purchased 40 books for $2, including "The Osama bin Laden I Know" by Peter L. Bergen. It is a compilation of first-hand accounts from friends and foes who knew the terrorist. After finishing the 444-page tome, my sense that bin Laden got what he deserved was only strengthened. While, in the beginning, the egomaniac may have had some legitimate grievances with historical American actions in the Arab world, in the end his purpose devolved into a never-ending cycle of...

Dozens of individuals and businesses across Clovis and Portales are baking and gathering cookies to give to single airmen for Christmas. The first sergeants of Cannon Air Force Base have once again asked Cannon families and personnel to donate cookies to provide for the 700 single airmen on the base, which is up from 500 last year. • No holiday break from worries

    Ned Cantwell State columnist

It is just a couple of weeks before Christmas and we are all grateful for the season. For this brief time we can shed our concerns, bask in the holiday spirit. It is the one time of year we can relax and forget our woes. As 2012 nears the end of her flight, much like a 727 trying to land in 100 mph winds, your humble correspondent has put his worries behind him. Like, as a young friend of mine would say, I am totally not worried. Except for the fact I am heading for a fiscal cliff. I don't even know what to wear. An inner... Full story

  • Letter to the editor: Animal control officers need protective vests

On Nov. 28, Animal Control Officer Roy Marcum was shot and killed in the line of duty at a Galt, Calif., home that was supposed to be vacant due to a foreclosure and eviction the day prior. Having lived in Galt for many years, this story caught my attention. The first thought that came to mind, yet again, is why aren't we providing our animal control officers with bulletproof vests? Many newspaper commenters throughout the region asked that question and also took it one step further to inquire about firearms. ACOs are rarely...

  • Spouse briefs: Telescope deepens appreciation of nature

    Rebecca Adling Cannon Connections columnist

Clovis is an interesting place. There aren't very many trees, the terrain is about as flat as can be, the elevation is over 4,000 feet and when it comes down to it not very many people live here. All these factors combined make for an incredible opportunity, the opportunity to enjoy the beauty of the night sky. All my life I grew up in midst of large urban populations. Looking up to the sky at night meant seeing a hazy light polluted brown expanse with maybe a couple of bats flying by. Although I could see the moon most night...
